@dotti573: The building is still there, it's the Community Center right by the Park & Ride, and may I add very expensive  to rent.

@thegoodwife: The justification was that is was cheaper to tear done and build new rather than remodel. That's our tax dollars at work... 4951

@tatertot58:  That's always their lame excuse!  How could that be unless there were structural problems, but how old could that building have been. They think it's money that falls from the sky, sort of free!

So much for it being a community center

@Fallon: Remember when we all hoped it would have activities, events, something for the kids to do...you know..like a community center?  Instead we get a generic building offering nothing anyone really needs.  Such a waste.
And although the library is a few years old now, it's still pretty dang nice.  If you haven't been, you should make a visit.  Once you get your library card, you can also check out a ton of books and other media electronically at www.hcpl.net  4951

When that library was built five years ago, seemed kinda off the beaten trail at first.  That's a GOOD thing!  Easy in and out with lights at the intersection to let folks through.  Never understood tearing down the old building tho. 4951

To re-model you have to fix all the things that are not to code.  The old library was built when Kingwood was not in the City.  Lots of code violations that would have added to the cost of a building re-model.  4951

Let's sum this up.  The government created all sorts of new codes that made remodeling so expensive that it was cheaper to tear down the old building and build a new one. That's government efficiency. 4951

I have no idea how many city codes are new.  The library was built pre-annexation.  There are no county codes/building permits/inspections.   It wasn't old city codes vs. new city codes that applied in this case.  That being said, what you said may apply to old city buildings.  Funny that the Community Center had a notice from the city months ago that said they had not gotten a certificate of occupancy  Ha!  The city violating it's own rules.   4951
