That sucks...was that recently? I heard we were supposed to get some crazy weather here this week. As of right now I am looking at my sheet on the line, not even a flutter of wind out there. 4951

I know exactly where that is.  The elevated RR tracks are coming down off of the Mississippi River bridge.  It's actually in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. 4951

It was posted yesterday, and here is the lead-in:ELMWOOD, La. (WGNO) – Nearly a dozen shipping containers and some train cars were blown off elevated tracks in Jefferson Parish Monday.WGNO reporter Jabari Thomas captured the moment when strong winds knocked over some train cars on the Huey P. Long Bridge. It happened around 10:30 a.m. Monday in Elmwood behind the Raising Cane’s restaurant on South Clearview Parkway and Bloomfield Street. 4951

It was yesterday. It was from the same weather system that moved through here Monday morning. My mom headed back home from here to her home in Louisiana this morning. She lives near Lafayette. Her yard and driveway were full of large branches. She said there was a lot of other debris around town. 4951

The real question is why the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad had not shut down traffic across the bridge. There are rules in place that govern operating a train in high wind conditions. 4951

If there's no high wind advisory then they continue to run. 4951

No advisory from the dispatcher then proceed in compliance with rule 6.21.

Get you a copy of the NOPB Special Instructions... The issue is not with train crew, I agree with that. They do not have access to the info the DS does. I have been across that bridge on trains and hyrail. But the weather was no surprise, the trains should have been stopped before getting the signal across the bridge. 4951

I don't doubt blow over speeds are in their SSI. All I'm saying is maybe the hadn't been told to comply with them. I wasn't told about the tornado watch the other day and I was moving a Z train! 4951

No doubt the train crew would not be accountable, but someone dropped the ball.. big time. I imagine there will be an investigation hearing on this one. I can just see that notice now... 4951
