I am looking to purchase a pressure washer to do my house, driveway, etc.  Does anybody have any suggestions for one that isn't too expensive but will do the job? 4951

Sears has a 2700psi, 3.5gpm, Briggs & Straton engine for about $279 on sale.  The local Sears Hardware and Appliance stores do not have it in stock.  I went through Sears.com and had it shipped to me at no charge.  However, they royaly screwed up my order and it was not a good experience.I don't know what price range you consider expensive.  I would not go with anything less than 2500 psi. 4951

I got one from Sams with a Honda engine, been having it for 3 years, very good, 2800 PSI and has an adjustable dial on the sprayer. I highly recommend getting something around that PSI with an adjustable sprayer on the end, not they old kind where you have to switch out the heads manually. Hated those because very easy to lose and drop them. And never leave it in freezing temperature! Even in a garage. It says that on almost all of them. It will ruin it. I did this once. Think it messes up the pump or something.     4951

I have a Toro that has the same specs as what retired engineer listed from Sears.  Got it from Lowe's for $279.00  Does a good job and come with 4 different heads for cleaning decks, concrete, vehicles etc.as well as an adjustable sprayer.  I know to stay away from electric ones.  They burn out quickly I understand 4951

@beastmode:   I actually prefer the replaceable heads.  Haven't lost one yet (had my previous washer 8 years). There are two issues when storing a pressure washer:     Our water is very hard (contains lots of dissolved minerals).  When it dries out, it      can leave a "crust" which can damage the valves and seals in the pump.     As you stated, freezes can be an issue.  The water left in the pump can damage the pump if frozen. Both of these issues can be resolved with the use of Briggs & Stratton's Pump Saver.  Before storing, fill the pump with Pump Saver.  It contains both a lubricant and anti-freeze.

I always recommend buying the small electric pressure washers. Plenty of pressure out of the hose-end. Gas-driven pressure washers are good if you're not near an outlet, and never used on a vehicle. I got 5 years out of my last electric pressure washer, and I used it all the time, as I paint houses. 4951
