As @donnatella pointed out, the previous thread on tipping could be a whole other subject.I'd like to take a minute to educate anyone here who has never been a server.I am not currently a server, but on behalf of the good, hardworking people who are, let me break down the math for you....Servers are paid a base of roughly $2.17/hr. They have opening and closing duties they perform for 1-2 hours before and/or after they actually get seated with a customer. This includes polishing, light and heaving cleaning, stocking, etc.They do NOT get to keep all the tips for the night. Let's say a table has a tab of $100, each server must tip out 7% of that - $7 - no matter what tip they receive. That 7% goes to busboys and the bar. Still following? So if you give a server $2, even if it's on a $50 bill, THEY ARE PAYING FOR YOU TO EAT THERE!!! They are not only serving for free, they are LOSING money!For goodness sake, there are some cheap people in Kingwood, but stay home if you don't want to tip, because these people don't appreciate paying to serve and do your dishes!!Rant over. 4951

I tip based on service- ignore me- you get a penny. Do a decent job ( this doesn't include kitchen or bar F ups) you get the standard . Do an excellent job- you get 30- 60% of the bill (excluding tax). You want to know how many servers get that from us in KW? 2-3. There's 2  at one restaurant and 1 at another. Don't tell me to stay at home. Do your job  and do it well and you will get a bonus. And yeah I waited tables back in the day and yeah there are some cheap tippers. BUT from what I've seen in the hood- there are way more sorry servers than cheap tippers. 4951

@Jpgurl: Pardon me, but this is directed toward people who say they tip $1, $2, or $3 no matter what. There have been two incidents where I have not tipped at all. I didn't say everyone deserves 15-20%, but not many people understand how tipping works.

@Jpgurl: I couldn't agree with you more. I can only think of a couple times I have stiffed a server on a tip and its always been after service that border on offensively bad. Normal plain old service is going to get 15% or thereabouts, where as when I'm pleased with service it isn't unusual for me to give 25-50% depending.I've also been so **** off at the staff screwed up a redo on a screw up on a redo on a you get the point that I've walked on on the whole ticket and left with a burnout around the entire establishment.When @mahm and I went to Los Cucos Monday night I think I tipped twenty something on a $50 check. Clearly that is outside the norm though as the server repeatedly thanked me for my generosity. *shrug* he did a good job and the tip wasn't a big deal.

If a server gets $0 tips for the night they still make minimum wage

@mm4731: no they don't necessarily. it is allowed that the establishment can deduct FROM the minimum wage they are supposed to pay a guesstimated amount for tips whether or not the server receives the tips or not. and in some houses, management demands a share of the tips as well.

@ProblemAgain: Yes, at least that's been my experience during slow lunches. I've calculated earning $3-4/hr when I've just had one table during lunch, and had to perform mid-shift duties. Restaurant managers and owners can claim the servers made cash, so they don't have to pay out minimum wage.

@Elle10....we tip very well usually 20 to 30 % sometimes more if the service was really good & we didn't have to wait for refills or ask a dozen times when our meal was coming & it arrived cold. That being said....here in Kentucky most places have all the servers turn in their tips & it is divided evenly at the end of their shift . And a form is filled out for each server on the amount of  the tips & if it does not make their salary  $7.25 an hour the business has to make up the difference so it does equal $7.25 an hour . In Ohio  it is $10.00 an hour as of the 1st of the year  . Soon Ky. will also push their 's to $10.00 an hour. It is no longer legal to work anyone for less than minimum wage .  4951

Then the establishment is breaking the law. There is no lower minimum wage for servers, the lower hourly wage is only a difference of how they get paid, it is allowed on assumption that the sever receives tips. If they make 0 in tips, the establishment is required to make up the difference. The federal minimum wage applies to severs just like everyone else. 4951

what the law is and whether or not it is enforced and how it is administered are different things. in some establishments, managers demand a portion of the server's tips as well. so you will have a manager pulling in a percentage of every employees tips on a shift like a labor contractor for the dubious gift of allowing the server or busboy etc to work there. 4951

@ProblemAgain:

Although tip pooling and tipping out are legal, it's completely illegal for management to take a portion of an employee's tips. Why would anyone work at an establishment that pays below min wage or takes your money illegally? It's not hard to find another job that pays min wage. I would never give my business to an establishment that I knew treated people like that.

there are a lot of illegal things that people tolerate. sometimes they fail to see a choice or as one person told me once, "a part time job with ****** pay is better than a no time job with no pay" 4951
