Well, I am trying Facebook for the third time.  The first time I tried it was just out of curiosity.  Once I saw what people were posting (eg a picture of a chicken-fried steak, etc), I killed my account after about 3 days.  My nephew encouraged me to try it again so I did.  I had my account for about 2 months and didn't really pay much attention to it.  Then suddenly, I started getting dozens of emails each DAY telling me a friend posted something.  I couldn't find out how to kill that action, so I just killed the account. Now, I'm trying for the third and final time.  I'm trying mainly because my nephew had posted a lot of good recipes.  Also, my dad had given him two small boxes full of recipe cards.  He is photographing them and posting them.  It's good to see my mother and father's handwriting as well as getting some of their recipes.  Of course, as soon as I opened a new account, I got help in turning off the email nonsense.  It's good to see so many of my old high school class, but DANG, they have turned into old farts!!  I will say this, Facebook seems to be the most confusing internet sites I've ever used.  Don't screw up when entering your background info or you'll never be able to edit it (or sometimes even find it). 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Just a few things I learned early about Facebook. First: I didn't enter much background information .Second: I quickly un-followed those people who post EVERYTHING. Last: I never accept invitations to play those doggone games.

@retired_engineer there are settings to turn off all email notifications and squash all game invites. They are buried but once you find them and get everything set, including making everything private then it's a good tool for exactly what you are talking about. I use it to keep in touch with family and friends that don't live here. That being said neither one of my kids has a Facebook. Lol. My parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, cousins, etc all have one. For my kids, at their ages, it was more about detaching from the drama that comes with young people. I helped my parents with their settings because the same things you mentioned were bothering them. My dad has become a political poster and I hate that. I have all other extreme political and religious posters hidden from my news feed. But I can't hide my Dad. 4951

I used it a lot for a while but got tired of people complaining about their exes or bragging about their perfect lives. I check it now only periodically and post pics of the kids for distant relatives. I was glad that I checked it today because I learned that my uncle was in the hospital and my parents didn't already know. As soon as I told them, they called my aunt then headed to the hospital to be with her. 4951

I like it to stay in touch with certain relatives and some friends only post play dates via Facebook.  Other than that i post the occasional picture of my little one or post what i cooked for dinner.  Sometimes i ask gardening questions or post how my garden is progressing.I try not to brag, but occasionally do about my daughter but usually something like posting she ate asparagus or some craft project she did good with.  I usually ignore the political stuff, unless it is really funny.  I also like to see what gardening sites post on Facebook.  I don't do any games.  sometimes i check classified stuff if i need to buy kids clothes, etc. 4951

I use my Dh's account.  Of course, I forget that I am on his and start chatting with him.  It looks like he has lost his mind and is chatting with himself Emoticon 4951

@Retired_EngineerDo you have a Harris County Public Library Card? If you do, I can show you how to access assistance for Facebook (and other things) for free, right from the comfort of your own home. Kingwood Library also has some Facebook classes, right now, I think they're covering uploading photos.  4951

bragging about their perfect lives..
@Mahm: We all have that one friend, I guess.  This one is married to someone who makes a lot of money so she has never really had to work.  She's all:  "woo hoo, just booked another cruise" or "just woke up at 10, had my coffee, now off for a mani/pedi then the gym" or, the best one to date..."woo hoo, I'm off to the mall while the housekeeper cleans...will come home to a sparkling clean house in a few hours."

Look, I get that she is uber happy or at least wants us to think she's uber happy, but it's also like she's rubbing it in everyone's face that has to work all day. She's just absolutely CLUELESS!!!  I get the urge to blocker her, a lot. 4951

@donnatella: I have a few friends who brag on FB and make me jealous. I need to remind myself not to be jealous cause I'm way sexier than all of them.

And know, I don't want to see a picture of every single meal you eat. If you go somewhere really cool, then maybe, but not the same old everyday crap. Exceptions are happy hour 'Rita pics. I almost always want to see those, unless I'm not invited....then you can suck it!!! 4951

@uneasyrider@FrancitaThanks, I didn't really try very hard to find those controls last time.  This time, as soon as I opened an account, I found those switches and turned them off.  I am finding some people already are posting crap every day!@vinbert:  Thanks for the offer, but I don't intend to spend much time on Facebook.  I am able to find the pictures and recipes that I was looking for, so now, I'll just check it once in a while.  I find it too boring to spend much time on. 4951
