Study: Heavy drinkers are rarely alcoholics Elizabeth Armstrong Moore, Newser Staff 12:38 p.m. CST November 21, 2014Stacey Tilbury of Portage, Mich., drinks a glass of Bell's Oberon at the Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo Monday, March 24, 2014.(Photo: Mark Bugnaski, AP)CONNECT 96 TWEET 1 LINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMOREFrequently drinking too much booze does not mean you're an alcoholic. In fact, it means that only rarely.A new study by the CDC and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finds that 1 in 3 American adults meet the definition of heavy drinking—for men, having five or more drinks in one sitting or 15 or more in a week; for women, having four or more drinks in one sitting or eight or more in a week. But of those so-called "excessive" drinkers, only 1 in 10 also meets the definition of alcoholism or alcohol dependency, which the CDC says involves "a current or past history of excessive drinking, a strong craving for alcohol, continued use despite repeated problems with drinking, and an inability to control alcohol consumption." 4951

that report is pretty much splitting hairs....they are defining alcoholics as people who are ALREADY having personal and employment issues caused by their use of alcohol. kind of a you aren't a junkie till you are convicted for a related crime theory. most of us know a short list or even a long list of people who are alcoholics but their case of the disease just hasn't progressed to the point of them sleeping under the bridge yet or being fired or being told get the f out of here. guess to really hit the definition dead center you have to be a skidrow unemployed pissyourpants every day drunk 4951

@Retired_Engineer: if you're a heavy drinker long enough, the definition is made and your family, your coworkers, your employer and the pathologist performing the autopsy will say an alcoholic.

I'm pretty sure my BIL was an alcoholic for quite a few years back in the 70s and 80s.  He was more than just a heavy drinker.  He NEEDED to drink.  Fortunately, he realized that he was losing a lot in life.  He got divorced (he knew was most of the problem), moved away, straightened up, got a new job, and got serious.  Now, he still likes a drink, sometimes heavily, but you can tell he doesn't NEED it like he did before..... and he does limit himself. 4951

@Retired_Engineer, my son did an experiment in school this year.  They took a raw egg, and let it sit in Alcohol for a set amount of time.  The Alcohol cooked the egg.  I can only imagine what someones liver must look like if they drink frequently.  After seeing that, I am far less inclined to have a drinkEmoticon
