I wouldn't recommend doing anything in the legal system pro se. 4951

Yep. I used LegalZoom. Easy Peasy for a non-contested divorce. Total cost was $75.00. I had to do the leg work by taking all paperwork for filing, but it was MUCH cheaper than an attorney. 4951

I wouldn't if kids are involved. There are templates online.
Some courts will put through some grief if not done exactly right. They want you to use one ofthegood ol boys. 4951

My former hairdresser and her ex used legal zoom to get divorced. She said it was really easy. 4951

If you have any custody issues, I would go with a lawyer. Also, be sure to secure your rights to retirement and 401k's. 4951

I totally agree about hiring an attorney if there are children or property involved. But if it's non-contested and without the other baggage, you can handle it yourself. 4951

@mattem....if you and your current significant other can work things out fairly and amicably for the kiddoes, that's great. But....that's rare and hard to accomplish. If I were you, I'd hire an attorney and make sure the kids have an advocate to protect them. Money is the least of your worries if there are babies involved. 4951

@mattem:

My hairdresser had 2 kids with her ex at the time. And a home together. Because they agreed on their own about how things should be done, a lawyer wasn't necessary. 4951

I disagree. Money is one of the most important things. If you don't have enough money, you can't take care of your children. Get everything you need at this time because you will not want to go back to court to ask for more. 4951

Ex,s generally are great about kid issues at first, when they meet someone new and remarry, no matter how much they love their kids, their new family becomes priority. I talk Not from only experience but I have seen it a hundred times over. If kids are involved don't take a short cut. This goes for both sexes. And remember that it's not just till 18 either, college, weddings , illnesses, you name it. One parent usually gets stuck with 90% the cost.

Don't take short cuts in a divorce with children. Parenthood is forever. 4951

There are some lawyers who will accept a reasonable retainer and monthly payments. If that's an option for you, I would ask around. Some lawyers are good with paperwork, others with litigation. Make sure you get one with the skills you need. I If you really feel you can come to an agreement about custody and support, maybe Legal Zoom or Prepaid Legal would be adequate options for you.

If necessary I can recommend a Kingwood lawyer who is good with paperwork and may work with you on payment. 4951

If you're a woman, don't do anything. You'll get the kids, the house, the cars, the retirement accounts and more child support money than you probably deserve.

If you're the man, call Fathers For Equal Rights immediately. If you don't, you'll lose the kids, the house, the cars, your retirement and you'll pay more than you probably should.
