After my email yesterday to three top Kelsey-Seybold executives, the Chief of Surgery and Specialties called me personally this morning and asked if I could be there for a 10:30am appointment with an Infectious Disease doctor (instead of waiting until Oct 17).  The appointment went great and the doctor was excellent!  I get a PICC line put in Friday and start IV antibiotic treatments. After that, I will continue the treatments at home for up to 6 weeks. This was my first time that Kelsey-Seybold was less than great with their service, but they have resolved my issue.  I still think they need more than five part-time doctors in their Infectious Disease department.  The doctor I saw was the only one seeing KS patients this week and ONLY for this morning.  He was also covering for doctors at four different hospitals this week.  I was impressed that he took the time to discuss the history of my leg, he also answered any questions we had, and explained optionsI don't write letters of complaint very often, but I will when I feel it is necessary.  It's a marvel that I've had my leg the last 42 years (since the motorcycle accident) and realize that I may eventually lose it, but it won't be due to some medical bureaucracy! 4951

Is this a post-surgery issue?

@TXSunDvl:  Yeah, but it involves an open wound from around April.  We treated it under doctors instructions but it wouldn't heal.  Some tissue grew over the bone but it died.  The "surgery" was just debriding the wound of the dead tissue.  The infection could have come from the hospital, but it most probably came from when we went to Fredericksburg for our anniversary in August.  We rented a cottage.  We wrapped/sealed the leg in plastic before getting into the hot-tub, but it was wet when we got out, so the wound was exposed to who-knows-what.

My wife has a wound on her foot that wouldn't heal.  She went to a wound care clinic, and they have us applying medicinal honey once a day.  I had never heard of that, but it seems to be working. 4951

@TXSunDvl:  Honey has very strong anti-bacterial properties.  That's the reason that honey never spoils.I'm glad to hear that your wife's wound is healing!

How long will you need to be in the hospital with the PICC line?  It's a pretty involved procedure putting them in. 4951

@TXSunDvl:  I have to be at St Lukes by 6am Friday morning.  The process to install the PICC  should begin at 8am.  Once it's in, they will give me both antibiotics so they can make sure I don't have any negative reactions and then go home.  They said to be prepared to spend all day, but it might not take that long.  My wife is a former nurse so she will be able to hook up the antibiotic bags after that first day, but they will send a home-health nurse twice a week to get blood samples.

@TXSunDvl:   Thanks!  Several other KDC'ers have also offered but we are doing OK.  I'm ambulatory but the docs want me to keep my leg elevated as much as possible.

Picc lines only take about an hour at most to place but you might have to wait a while for the doc ir picc line nurse depending on how many lines they need to place that day. They are wonderful things as long as they are maintained properly. Do not get it wet!!! Good luck. What are they prescribing for your wound dressing? I love silver myself. It works wonders. 4951

@Nurse3:  They had put a vacuum system on the wound but the area around the wound is old skin grafts and got very irritated by the plastic seal They called it very angry skin.  So we've been cleaning it with saline and covering it with a non-stick pad and gauze.  The plastic surgeon that debided the wound wants to use the vacuum again, but maybe space it with some plain dressing like we are doing now.  When I see him Tuesday, I'll ask him about any other dressing.  We had used Iodosorb for the months before the debridment.

So, do you have a bell to ring when you want something? My husband rather enjoyed his when he had his wisdom teeth removed. After just a few days, his bell ringing privileges were revoked! Lol

Wishing you the best. Emoticon 4951

Ask him about Aquacel Ag.  It has silver imbedded into it and works wonders.  I haven't seen your wound so I wouldn't know if it would be appropriate, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. 4951
