Well, it took me a while to stop in and check out Veron's Meat Market after winning the GC a couple of months ago. Actually, it's my own fault because from WLHP, I just don't go that direction on 1960 too often, and when I do, it's has been after they have closed.Well, to be perfectly honest, until I won the GC, I had no idea the place even existed, so I ventured over yesterday to check them out, cash in the GC and maybe buy a few other things for the upcoming holiday grill fest. I have to say, I was not excited about walking into a meat market (the food kind, that is) thinking it would have the typical meat market smell. Anyway, I walked in and was overcome by the amazing smell of walking into someone's kitchen that has been cooking all kinds of fabulous Louisiana dishes. The first thing I notice is a cooler that is full of fully cooked ready to eat take away items - all things Cajun like gumbo, etouffee , etc. Then I make my way over to another wall of coolers/freezers with a mind-blowing variety of more all things Cajun favorites, both frozen and ready to grill. I finally make my way over to the service counter where I meet Ronnie Veron, the owner. I tell him who I am and that the KDC GC brought me in. I thought for sure he would have said, "sorry Peaches, we don't remember, it's been too long" but they did remember. We had a very nice long conversation about our area, ADC, KDC, his business, his products that he brings back from Louisiana, etc. Anyway, I went back through the cases and coolers and decided to try a variety of his specialty items like crawfish stuff jalapenos, stuffed pork chips, beef and chicken skewers, and I also found my favorite dirty rice mix that I special order from a mom and pop place in Louisiana. By coincidence, he also buys from the same place and has a small case of the dirty rice and jambalaya mixes on his shelf of Louisiana specialty products. If you have some time and find yourself looking for a great locally owned business to support, I would definitely recommend going to visit with Ronnie.
