My daughter is in choir. I got a call from a teacher whom I won't name, but its not her choir teacher. She is offering private voice lesson which cost $30 for a 1/2 hr. She seems very nice and very qualified my issue is that it will take place during her choir class. Is this allowed? If she participated does she still get full credit for her class? How is that fair to the students that don't participate? Also she is running a private business inside a public school. Does that mean all teachers can offer private lessons for a fee? Opinions and comments are welcome. 4951

I believe some of the band students take private lessons during band hours.  Maybe she is doing this on her off hour, if there is such a thing. 4951

I would go straight to the school and ask these questions. It is odd to me that she would charge money during school hours... 4951

They are allowed to teach on campus *after school* if they are an approved lesson teacher with a background check through the district. These teachers are private vendors. Please Pm me, if you have specific questions, OP. 4951

@landlady:

KMS band director also does private lessons, unsure if its during school or not, but to me there's some conflict of interest, kinda like double dipping. He should be doing extra practice, lessons for free for the students and not charging for stuff he should be doing during school hours... 4951

My son works at a high school in a different ISD.  IF teachers have an open period, they are supposed to use that time for grading, class preparation, or communicating with parents via email or phone. 4951

It doesn't sound right to be charging money during school hours. You should contact the teacher and call that person, and ask them what is up with it being during class. I don't believe having your daughter miss class for "private lessons" is allowed either... I do remember my nephew being at KHS and having lessons during class for orchestra (and after school), but it was free and in a group. 4951

I agree, I don't have an issue after school but do not think it is ethical during school. I don't think it is fair to the other students and teachers. What about all of those teachers that tutor for free during their very rare free time? They are not charging.My husband brought up a good point. Since all the teachers are approved and have clearences, if you have enough money, you should be able to pay them for private lessons in each class. His issue are these teachers that are doing this are teaching classes that are electives. The teachers that are teaching the core state required classes are not. 4951

@landlady:
I'm not completely positive, but I'm fairly sure that music teachers at KHS offer free after school lessons when asked for, and a few weeks before a big event... I'd really try everything before paying someone a dollar a minute during class time... 4951

Again, these teachers are private vendors and they are not allowed to be teaching during school hours. KHS is bending the rules of the district set by the director of fine arts if these lessons are happening during school hours. I am the voice teacher at two other campuses in Humble ISD so I speak from first hand experience.

Eta:These are NOT the choir teachers and band directors giving these private lessons. They (we) are professional musicians and private instructors whose whole job is to provide one on one training to students. We also pay a rental fee to the district to use their practice rooms.

@singingmomma thank you for the clarification. Are the private vendors only in the fine arts or are they in all departments? 4951

In response to the KMS reply, I can't say whether or not that is allowed as I'm not sure.

You can contact the fine arts dept if you have questions. All I know is that I used to be allowed to teach during the day on campus. That ended 5 years ago and now we are supposed to only teach after school.

And Landlady: I do not know about the other departments. 4951
