As I was washing my hands in the spare bathroom sink last night, I was caught off-guard by two long, thin antennae sticking out of the drainage hole at the back of the sink. OMG I have goosebumps again as I type this... I grabbed some TP and tried to grab it, but I missed. Anyway, I quickly turned out the lights and shut the door behind me. About 2 hrs later I figured I had better go in and see if there were any critters running around as that's the BR my kids use and I didn't need the whole house waking up to screaming in the middle of the night... Well, there was a huge-****, reddish brown bug on the counter. With looooong antennae. I have no idea what it was - it didn't look like the cockroaches I've come across.... but now I know where the buggers I keep finding in that bathroom are coming from.  I chased the thing around the counter, finally maiming it with the Softsoap bottle. I got the rest of it with the stone toothbrush holder and scooped it up with some baby wipes right into the loo. I think I need another shower. *shiver* What the hell was that thing???! 4951

wood or water roach......they are actually kind of funny and will even stalk you but they dont bite and because they are huge if they decide to fly it will cause you to run around screaming like a lunatic and they will chase you till you fall down the stairs and break a leg. While laying on the floor in pain they will stop running and flying and will just look at you and if you listen real close you can hear it laughing at you. Also they do not breed quite like normal roaches.....most homes will have one or two that appear occasionally looking for water. They like to live under piles of trash, leaves, wood.....etc. Most breed in the woods and just find themselves indoors once in a while. You wont have 10.000 of them next week like you would with regular tiny gross nasty roaches. 4951

Oh dear God - thank you for the warning. LOL At least if I know they don't bite, I might keep my cool.  It was all I could do from screeching and waking everyone up last night... I think I was quite forceful with that soap bottle, though! So, is there anything I can spray down that drain hole to kill anything else that might be lurking? I've been coming across one every 5 weeks or so... hell, I don't even know what the "inside" of a sink looks like and how they're getting in there! 4951

They dont bite but if one lands on you their legs feel pinchy like. Also they can carry nasty germs in on their legs. If you see tiny black spots as in pin tip tiny that is their poo.....LOL Keep tooth brushes in containers as they will walk over them looking for water droplets. Most that do find themselves inside will crawl in the hole in the sink and hang there...usually found in kitchen or bathroom. As said they dont breed crazy so if you cant kill it just chase it outside. No reason to go chemical crazy since they dont populate as bad as the little ones. Of course if you live like an episode of hoarders and your house is about to be condemned they may over populate.....lolBut the small roaches, dont care how clean you are....blink an eye and they can get out of hand if not careful. 4951

Catch it and release it outside.  They make a mess, when you smash them. 4951

God, growing up North, cockroaches, to me, = dirty. Ugh. Yup - saw the black dots when I first got him with the soap bottle - so that was poo. Yuck. Time to break out the bleach again. Any time DH bleaches that bathroom, I find a roach the next day. No bleaching in the past two weeks, though...Thanks for all of the info! I'll give the leasing agent a heads up that they might want to exterminate before the next tenant moves in, between the roaches and termites I found in out kitchen (although the door repair guy caulked up the holes/spaces in the baseboards by that outside door.Do I dare say I almost miss the stinkbugs we had up North?! 4951

Actually everyone who lives here needs to have an exterminator come on a quarterly basis.  Prevention is the way to go.

@Fallon: Agreed. We use Terminix, but there are a lot of choices. Definitely worth the money.

@ctl74: Like @Burnsway indicated, they aren't necessarily coming in the drain.  You're just seeing them there because they are looking for water.
Totally agree with @Fallon that quarterly visits from an exterminator (or rolling your own with the help of a place like Bugtime on 1960) is the way to go.  I will say that even with chems put down finding one inside every 5 weeks or so is about what you can expect living here. 4951

I had a tree roach bite me once.Got me on that tender spot between the fingers.Don't catch them, just kill them. Also don't swat them if they land in your beard (or hair if you have nappy hair). It takes forever to get all those leg pieces out. 4951

Those things are my worst fear!! One time there was one in my bathroom sink. He crawled into the overflow hole so I closed the drain and taped up the overflow hole. Next morning I found that he had chewed through the tape! I had always heard that they don't live inside of houses, they just come in for water. Well, that is not true. When we remodeled out kitchen, we found a cluster of them inside one of the walls! 4951

@Burnsway: LOL.....so I'm not crazy! I have always had an irrational fear that they are watching me and just waiting for the chance to get me!

We see them in the garage when we go out at night, but they don't make it into the house with two cats sitting by the door.  4951
