every time hubby leaves town something goes wrong , so Monday morning he left for Houston &  as usual  I carried the clothes basket to the basement to do laundry & I noticed water coming from the overflow valve on the furnace/ac unit . So I called the repair guy & he came out  today . It turns out that the "overflow pipe was clogged . He blew air into the lines & unclogged it & told me to pour a cup of bleach down the  overflow tube on the back once every other month & that would stop clogs from happening in the pipes.Has anyone else ever heard of this ?  Total cost was $97.00 ( I had a coupon for a free service call ) that saved me $89.00 . The guy was so helpful with hints  that I took out a service contract  for a year & he will come back once every 3 months & check out my ac unit & my furnace . Cost of the service contract was $175.00 . This is the 1st time we have had any problems so I thought the contract was a good deal  since our ac& furnace were put in in 2005 . It's called peace of mind  when hubby is gone. 4951

@Fallon ....I get so tired of things going wrong when he leaves ....I figure with them coming out every 3 months to check on both units if anything is going to go "kaput" they will catch it before it gets to that point ...hopefully..Just found out we need a new winter cover for our in-ground pool & they start at $1600.00 , what's the old saying ?  If it can go wrong it will happen while he's gone....it's true . 4951

Yes.Had one at the old house where the evaporator drain tube came out on the south side of the house. With all the sun, algae would build up in the opening, and eventually move up the pipe and clog it.I ended up digging a deep trench along the yard, filling it with crushed gravel, extending the pipe under ground into this gravel, and filling it back up.Now all my bushes on the back of the house had a regular supply of water during the summer (unintended benefit), and I didn't have to put bleach down the pipe.Only thing that ever gave me issues. 4951

Yes, this happened to be about two summers ago, I heard water and didn't know where it was coming from. Then all of a sudden I was sitting downstairs and saw water coming from the ceiling. My grandfather came out and said it was the AC unit...... my cousin who is a plumber came and blew the line and all was good. He told me sometimes slugs build up and you need to have the line cleared or pour some bleach down the line. But he gave me this solution that plumbers use instead of bleach and it works faster and better. 4951

A couple months after we moved into our rental house my DH was in the hospital for 8 days.  I ran home after work to get something and went upstairs and the water was just dripping like crazy in my DD's room.  I went up in the attic and the pan was overflowing.  I had no idea what to do.  I tried calling my landlord and she didn't call back for a few hours.

I got up in the attic with a big plastic storage container, a cup and a few beach towels and tried to get the water out of the pan after I shut off the air.  Luckily the AC guy came that night because there was no way I could get that container down the stairs.  He said it was an alge problem in the line.

He then showed us what to look for so it wouldn't happen again and every year now they come to do a maintenance check and blow out the line just to be sure it won't happen again.

This year they also installed a shut off switch.  If the pan starts to overflow the AC will shut itself off and then we call him to come fix it.

I hope nothing else goes wrong for you @wjo and that your grandson is feeling better.  I think I missed the update on that one.  4951

@dottie573.......Landen is doing great , he is back to his little boy self & doing all the things he did before he got the stick jammed into his tonsil . He really does not seem like it had any ill effects on him at all . He had all the nurses wrapped around his little finger & they were awesome with him . He loved all the attention & once the surgery was over & his mom was in the bed next to his he was ready for just about anything. I spoke with his mom this evening & she said she over heard him talking to his twin brother & telling him to get the crayon out of his mouth before he got hurt , so he did learn something from his accident & now he is passing that knowledge onto his brother & anyone else that will listen (LOL). Just as an add on ....our ac is working fine now , the water has dried up on the basement floor  & things are back to normal ...when I was talking to my hubby ( he's still in Houston) the only thing he was worried about was his "man cave" as it is  at the other end of the basement , typical man (LOL). 4951

sorry this happened to you...it seems stuff like this usually happens at the worst time. We're spending $$ hand over fist getting this Wichita house ready to market. Monday nite the a/c quit....bad coil. It's fixed now but $1200 poorer :o(. I'm trying to look on the positive side of things - it certainly could have been worse!
Glad your grandson has bounced back from his injury! Boys!!! 4951

@Fallon ......it seems unreal that we have been back home in Ky. for almost 2 years , but time flies when you are happy & having fun . It is hard to see any child hurt & not be able to help them & you put their lives in God's hands & the EMT's & doctor's that will be taking care of him or her. Our family has really been  through a lot with the boy's in just a week ...Robert fell off his bike & took 12 stitches in his head & several layers of skin off his back , then 2 days later Preston (Landen's twin ) slid down the  front porch  post & a nail sliced into his arm & it took 16 stitches to close it up . That night Landen  had the stick jammed down his throat & ended up spending time in the trauma unit & surgery plus the entire week-end in the hospital. The old saying "thing's happen in 3's " is true . Of course with 3 boys ages 7 & 5  bad things are going to happen when they are so active  & Boy's will be boy's  for sure. I told Tess ( their mom ) if she makes it to 40 with no gray hair she will be blessed 3 fold (LOL) .  4951

@the good wife.....we were told by the police department not to get our new garage door with windows because  anyone can look into your garage & see what you have or if your vehicles are in the garage so they know if you are home or not....we went to the "Crime Alert" classes here & they really opened our eyes as to what not to do  & how to avoid a lot of problems. If they have the classes in your area it would be a wise move to attend them . 4951
