Or am I being a witchy mom?Our son is enrolled at Quest Early College High School and he is having a somewhat difficult time his first year there. He is failing a couple of his courses and is trying to bring his grades up. I have been in constant contact with his teachers, on his *** to get the work done, etc. Well, I received an email a couple of days ago saying he had "mandatory boot camp" this Friday and the next Friday. My first thought was "awesome, maybe he will get the help he needs to pass this year". He brought home the letter for me to sign yesterday and I see it is NOT for his classes but for him to get tutored to pass the Algebra section of the STAAR test. I have to admit, I was livid. I felt, actually, a little betrayed by his school because they are taking measures to ensure he passes a standardized test but doing nothing to help him pass the courses he is failing. I emailed the vice principal earlier asking her why that is. I understand that a certain percentage of students have to pass to continue receiving funding, but aren't the students' whole school career just as important?? Am I over-reacting?? 4951

You are not overreacting. It sounds like their priorities are in the wrong place. It seems like public school is no longer about real education, just a numbers game. Sad. 4951

Nope, I don't think you are. They care more about the test results because the $$$ is tied to it, not whether our kids pass or fail. 4951

Quest is a joke. Always has been.

I was a student there the first two years it was open. No matter how many times they try to re-invent the curriculum, it never works. I'd love to see what percentage of quest kids have GED's compared to kids at KHS or KPHS. I guarantee its double at quest.

Get your kid back in a normal high school before its too late. 4951

The goal is not to see your kid pass,, the goal is to get all kids passing the STAAR exams,, so the school will get good reports and funding.I think you are getting a little worked up,, but I can understand. I say, let him go to the tutoring,, maybe it will help him in the class he needs. 4951

@PedroDePacas: Well I hope for my son's sake, you are wrong! I know in the beginning, Quest was an alternative school but it was changed in 2010, I believe, to an early college school, which is supposed to mean my son and the others, if they get all their credits, etc, will graduate with an associate's degree as well as a high school diploma. I do not want him going to a "regular" high school as I sincerely do not think he will fare well in that type of environment. He is somewhat of a misfit, lol, very bright and just not other kids his age. Our daughter did great at her high school but I don't feel our son would.I received a reply from the vice principal. She mentioned voluntary tutoring that teachers offer, and I know about that, it just upsets me that THIS tutoring is mandatory, they are MAKING him go, for the good of the school. That is what bothers me.Anywho, thanks to all who replied Emoticon

our Quest student actually has a choice between doing one that is for a failing course and another session that is for the state testing.  maybe it's different for sophomores?(She's had a rough year, but most of the difficulties she's in stem from 2 accidents and personal problems!)  4951

I think the tutoring will help no matter what the reason is. I would also supplement it with your own tutor. The goal is for your son to graduate and, hopefully, go to college. If that was my son that is what I would do and I have. 4951

@PedroDePacas:

Agreed. I wandered the school and never did any work for the 1 year I went there, and still maintained a 4.0
Glad I left and went to KHS.

Also pretty sure EC graduated from there, if that says anything.

Just wanted to say I would be mad too. It's sad how much they do for these stupid tests.

Yes, I would have been peeved!  I wish they would just go back to actually teaching the kids what they need to know, passing the ones who have learned it and failing the ones that didn't.  I hate all this teaching to the test and watching "our numbers".  It's all about the numbers now and not the kids! 4951

All schools are about the money...PERIOD! Oh, they'll tell you otherwise, but it'd be a lie.

Many schools will still educate your child and educate them well, but even these schools care only about the money...they just do it quietly.

Isn't 99% of everything about $$$ these days?
