to even begin, you have to figure out what fits what you do. laptops range from a 14 inch celeron processor with a 320 or smaller drive and 2 gb of memory to a 17 inch i-7 with 6 or 8 gb of memory and a tb drive. and the prices can range between 250 or 278 to 1600 depending on what you wantdo a little research on the reliability of the different brands before you commit to onethen  figure out what size you want...the processor and memory you can use that lets you enjoy using the laptop and that will run all the programs you want to use....what size hard drive you want tho most computer hard drives are actually huge unless you are storing large amounts of music or movies....that should give you some model numbers and then you shop around...check frys, office max and all the rest of the places that sell computers to see who is offering the best deal...you can do that by looking thru sites like blackfridayads..don't be afraid to buy up to a better computer rather than buy down to one you may end up unhappy owning and trying to use 4951

I bought a big laptop thinking that would make me happy, but it's really a pain in the backside to lug around.I'm back to using an older laptop that I put a new SSD drive in. 4951

I haven't been happy with any of the new laptops I've used recently.I hate hate hate the touchpads on some that don't have actual buttons (but use a zone on the pad for the left and right click).  They don't work well.I have a ThinkPad for work that also sucks.  Used to be great machines (thinkpads), but the plastic is really cheap on them now and breaks off easy. So, yeah, I don't have a good recommendation right now.  Maybe a Dell, haven't used one of those in a few years. 4951

Don't need MS Office,  unless you are note having to pay for it, then that's cool.  Otherwise OpenOffice is just as good, and free.Asus makes good laptops 4951

I want small enough to be portable, powerful enough to do work.I don't need the bells and whistles of the write on screen, the removable screen/tablet would be nice but not a requirement.
