Wow.  And I have one child, who is not diagnosed with asthma but has always been the most vulnerable to allergens and dust and anything like that.  He is allergic to cats as well.  In all honesty, I can tell if a place we go into is unclean because he immediately starts showing signs of irritated eyes, runny nose, sneezing...etc... My other kids are usually able to withstand anything, but they have been affected heavily.  Actually about 2 weeks ago, my oldest asked us if he could start taking his lunch because he feels like school lunch makes him sick.. I hope that's not the case, but better safe than sorry.  I am so sorry for your experience as well, and I hope that things work out for the better in the future, no matter what you choose to do.  But as for me and my house, we will homeschool Emoticon 4951

>> I also had issues with other kids being a bad influence on my kids. This school is quite the melting pot of social classes.

@MAHM: There is nothing wrong with a melting pot.  My dd was tormented and made fun by both parents and students in a supposedly "upper class"  school.  At NCISD, she has never come home with a foul mouth, she hasn't learned any of the anatomical terminology she did at the other district.

@Okiedokie: Didn't you say your kids attend Kings Manor? We looked at houses in that area, and sometimes I regret the decision to buy in Oakhurst. My nieces attend Humble ISD - Kingwood Schools, and I see so much pressure there to be beautiful and wear designer clothes, so I felt that NCISD would be a better fit for us. That was not the only reason. I also prefer to live in Montgomery County over Harris. My point is, I really think there is a significant difference between Kings Manor and Bens Branch. I have no problem with a melting pot, and I feel that I can teach my kids what is appropriate even when they are exposed to inappropriate behaviors. It was an afterthought, really. My biggest issue with the school was hygiene and illness.

@JayLoMom: My kids usually took their lunch. If/when they ate school lunch, they usually had a stomachache that evening or the next day.The few times I had lunch with my kids, I noticed some pretty unsanitary conditions. Kids are not required to wash their hands right before lunch (although the principal will disagree). I saw lunch ladies cleaning off the trays and putting back unopened applesauce containers and the like - for the next round of kids. I don't like waste, but if that applesauce was touched by a sick kid, I don't want it on my kid's tray.  There was a little girl sitting at my DD's table, and she had a bunch of sticky stuff all over her hands after eating. I told her she should go wash them in the sink. She asked an adult if she could and was told to wait for her teacher. She asked the next adult she saw, and that person sighed and huffed then told her reluctantly to go and come straight back. I understand maintaining order, but hand washing should be a much bigger priority. I would love to see a row of 6 sinks where kids can wash their hands immediately before entering the lunch line.

^^^ At the very least available hand sanitizer.

@rocket: the problem with this is, at the beginning of the year, parents send sanitizer with the supply list.  Well, some do.  Come November, there is no more sanitizer.  Should the teacher pay for it out of their own pockets?  They already have to pay for copies, etc.  Should hand sanitizer be built in the school budget?  I can tell you, if it is, parents will complain about that.If parents are asked, some would do it, but most won't.

@rocket: They have plenty of hand sanitizer in this school. And plenty of Lysol. I disagree with the overuse of both. All kids are required to use hand sanitizer before getting on a computer. I made sure my kids were allowed to wash their hands instead.I imagine they spray Lysol on all of the community supplies and call it good.Research tells me that these chemicals weaken the immune system and disrupt the nervous system. There is no substitute for good old-fashioned hand washing.

@Okiedokie: There are always notes sent home in the middle of the year requesting that parents send more hand sanitizer. I believe that all classroom supplies such as soap, sanitizer, ziplock bags, and copy paper be built into the school budget. Those were not parent-provided supplies when I was a kid. No, I do not believe the teacher should have to pay for any of that.  I think we, as homeowners, pay enough taxes that all of that should be easily included in the budget.

I only thought about the hand sanitizer because MAHM said that a kid that was simply trying to wash her hands and it turned into an ordeal.  So I opinioned perhaps if there was available sanitizers she could have gone to one that was say conveniently located in the cafeteria and at the very least she could use that.  I don't have a dog in this fight as our kids have finished school.  I was just trying to think of a feasible solution. 4951

You know what @MAHM I asked my kids if they wash their hands before lunch and they said no.  I was shocked.  We were in the horrible AldineISD before and even they brought a sanitation tote for the class to lunch.  My son was usually the leader and squirted hand sanitizer into everyone's hands before they ate.  But at this school, they don't practice these things, and I KNOW that would help a lot.  4951

@MAHM: But where do you take the money from? The principals and administrators aren't taking a pay cut.  The teachers already make diddley squat. The teachers and kids are the only ones who would suffer.  I agree something needs to be done-but again, until enough people complain and voice concern to the right people, all you/we are doing is talking out our wazoos.  Evidently, we needed a reno to the stadium more than supplies, etc.

@MAHM: I paid around $3800 in NCISD school taxes last year, and I expect its going to go up this year... and they still want you to provide all of the consumables for the classroom(s)
