How do you get your little ones to behave in the grocery store?

My 2year old won't sit still in the cart, out of the cart she is grabbing everything and getting in others way. I don't know what to do. Help! Pretty please 4951

Mine is 3. I threaten her. Lol. I tell her I am taking away her princess dresses and she straitens right up. Usually. They can be very trying at times. Just take a deep breath and wave to all the people staring. Emoticon 4951

Leave them home with dad.
Mom's deserve some time without kids. Even if it's going grocery shopping.

When do you get kid free time? 4951

I would get eye to eye with my children and tell them how they were expected to behave. If I had to leave a store because of their behavior the got their bottom lit up when we got home.

With 4 children I only ever had to leave a store 1 time.

My youngest was very bold and would tell other little ones off when she saw misbehavior.

One time she told a mother "You need to spank his butt.". Lol. 4951

@lola:
I do get some free time. But I don't always want to spend it shopping. 4951

@Brat: Emoticon we dont wanna see her on the 5pm news!I agree either leave at home, find a sitter or go after nap time.  take a game/toy or snack to keep them occupied.  Threatening and reverse psychology always worked on mine too!  Never had to leave a store as they  knew mom meant business at whooping some bootey!

Have her "help". She can hold a box for you, or put things in the cart. Tell her to help you find the apples, and let her put them in the scale. I talked to my twins the whole time we were in the store when they were little. Now that they are grown up, yhey automatically look for the best deal when they are shopping, and are proud when they find things on sale. It's kind of funny how all that yapping I did in stores when they were little actually sunk in. 4951

It seems like bribery but when you shop, parents usually buy the kid a thing or two anyhow so what I did was in the beginning of the shopping I let her pick a few little things she wants like stickers, certain snack....etc...when she started acting up I would threaten to put it back. Only one time it didn't work so EVERYTHING got put back, even my stuff an we left....never happened again...:-)Also if they can walk, letting them help you shop with a simple list and the kiddy cart and even having them hold your coupons can go a long was in good behavior. Let then make some small decisions on certain brands, colors, cheese...etc. They act out because they are bored and overwhelmed with all the goodies they cant touch....lolMy kid is 9 now, she pushes a cart, gets stuff im looking for, unloads that cart when we get up to cashier, even checks for price mistakes, helps load and unload the car and put up when we get home. Its very important to involve them as young as you can. When mine was 2 she had plastic scissors and I had her cut out coupons I knew I wasn't gonna use but it involved her.Make it fun and educational....goes a LONG way in being tantrum free. 4951

Our 4 year old loves to go shopping...And always has. This may be from taking her everywhere with me, since she was born?! She "helps" with getting the groceries(or whatever we're shopping for), and that is what keeps her focused. Emoticon 4951
