A woman says Santa Monica's new parking meters are ruining her health because of the wireless signal they emit and she wants $1.7 billion to make up for it.

Denise Barton is suing the city for the steep amount, because she says she's been felled by ear infections, ringing in her ears and neck pain since April, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press.

More than 100 FedEx employees at the company's Memphis, Tenn., parcel hub were treated for exposure after a forklift punctured a barrel of concentrated chili peppers used to make pepper spray.
Memphis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke told NBC News the five-gallon container was damaged by a FedEx employee outside the building early Thursday, and 117 employees were evaluated and decontaminated by fire rescue personnel.
Most of those affected were treated at the scene, but a 53-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were taken to the hospital, complaining of chest pains.

Swastika is a small town in Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1908, and got its name from a nearby gold mine. Then the Nazis went and adopted the swastika as their symbol, which made things a little awkward for the Swastika townsfolk. But despite pressure from the Canadian government, the townsfolk resisted changing the name of their town. After all, they had the name first!

When a store clerk gave a Massachusetts man a different kind of scratch-off lottery ticket than he asked for, he didn't make a big deal about the mistake; he said he just "rolled with it."

It was a good decision: He won $1 million.

Richard Brown of Taunton said he went into Gulf Taunton recently and asked for a $5 "Blue Ice 7s" ticket, but the clerk was distracted and instead gave him a "Sizzlin 7s" ticket.

Brown selected the cash option on the prize and received a one-time lump sum payment of about $430,000 after taxes. He plans to use the money for a new roof on his home and to take a trip to San Francisco.

Doctors say a 24-year-old construction worker survived after a 6-foot metal bar fell from above and pierced his head.
The bar fell from the fifth floor of a building under construction, went through Leite's hard hat, entered the back of his skull and exited between his eyes.
Luiz Essinger of Rio de Janeiro's Miguel Couto Hospital tells the Globo TV network that doctors successfully withdrew the iron bar from Eduardo Leite's skull during a five-hour-long surgery.
He said Leite is lucid and shows no negative consequences after the operation. Essinger said Friday that "it really was a miracle" that Leite survived.

The president first kissed his now-wife outside a Chicago ice cream shop - and there's a plaque to prove it.
The sweet smooch happened in 1989 when the president treated the first lady to ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins, which is now a Subway restaurant. The boulder sits in a flower bed next to the shopping center.
The owners of a Hyde Park shopping center installed the 3,000-pound granite marker this week with a plaque reading "On this site President Barack Obama first kissed Michelle Obama." There's a picture of the first couple and a quote from the president describing their first date.

A 'Who's Your Daddy' van is travelling around New York City, offering men the chance to find out whether they are the father of a child.

The owner and operator of the vehicle, Jared Rosenthal, is selling DNA tests, mostly to those who suspect youngsters may not actually be theirs.

Mr Rosenthal told CBS News: "They flag us down, they pull us over, they talk to us.

This is the bizarre moment that a plane had to be jump-started by a car. The biplane's engine failed to start during an air show at Headcorn Airfield near Maidstone, Kent. A wing-walking stuntwoman waited patiently while a friend of the pilot parked his Peugeot car in front of the plane and took out a jump lead to get the propellers whirling.

This Will Hurt for Only a Second

Fern Cooper, 65, and 13 other cataract-surgery patients arrived at Ontario's Oakville Trafalgar Hospital on June 25 to learn that they would not receive the usual anesthesia because the hospital had decided to schedule an "experimental day" to evaluate how unsedated patients responded. (The Ontario Health Insurance Plan had recently cut anesthesiologists' fee.) A topical numbing gel, plus doctors' reassurances were provided, but Cooper, previously diagnosed with severe anxiety, told the Toronto Star of the terror she felt when, fully awake, she watched the surgeon's scalpel approaching, and then cutting, her eyeball.

National Healthcare, such a good thing.

@elguapo:

Not sure, maybe should ask him.
And why he didn't share it with us.
I for one would like to know how to eat a watermelon.

Home was ransacked by a giant catfish

Xu and his wife claim the fish sneaked into their home, when their backs were turned.
They thought their one-room home was empty when they locked up to leave for their jobs as sanitation workers at 4am.
But when they came back at 9.30am, it had been trashed. They thought they had been burgled until they saw something moving on the floor.

An emergency layover in Syria’s  capital was bad enough. Then passengers on Air France Flight 562 were asked to  open their wallets to check if they had enough cash to pay for more fuel.

The plane, heading from Paris to Lebanon’s capital, diverted amid clashes  near the Beirut airport on Wednesday.

Low on fuel, it instead landed in  Damascus, the capital of neighboring Syria, where a civil war is raging.
