We recently found a rat snake on our rat trap in the garage.  Didn't think that was the way it was supposed to happen.  I have had a few neighbors call me to get the snakes out of their houses.  Only once were we successful.  4951

I had a dream with snakes in it last night so I've been expecting to run into one today but fortunately I haven't so far. Can't stand them. 4951

My wife didn't know the difference between snakes so when we moved here, I bought a book about "Texas Snakes".We've had several copperheads and one small rattler in our yard.  We've also had several garter snakes.  The copperheads were chopped, the rattler disappeared, and we left the garter snakes alone.

@Retired_Engineer:

Can you put the book in front of the snake in question and ask him to identify himself? 4951

@Annie: Yep.  Hold it real close so it bites your finger.  If you're alive and feeling fine the next day, it wasn't poisonous!The book has pictures of each type of snake.  Of course, you might need to get it to hold still so you can find it in the book!

@Retired_Engineer: Does your snake book tell you which snake has a yellow green tail when it's a juvenile? I have seen these a couple of times and think it's water moccasins, or it could be copper heads.

@attila: that's a water moccasin...."Juvenile and subadult specimens generally have a more contrasting color
pattern, with dark crossbands on a lighter ground color. The ground
color is then tan, brown or reddish brown. The tip of the tail is
usually yellowish, becoming greenish yellow or greenish in subadults,
and then black in adults. On some juveniles, the banding pattern can
also be seen on the tail."

@ProblemAgain: Thanks! I thought they looked like water moccasins, but it was hard to tell because the pattern was much lighter than what it is on adults.

Good morning all,

When you are a single lady and you find/see a snake who are supposed to call? On yesterday I called a neighbor and she too is afraid of snakes. So she went next door and told her neighbor and he and his son came over but by the time they got there the snake was gone they said. I'm just wondering if anyone else here has wondered the same thing as me..... The snake was big and crawling on my back deck going under my gas grill. I was sitting at the kitchen table on yesterday eating lunch and looking out back and saw it. Glad I was home from work to see that I had a snake living at my house. I'm afraid of them too; I don't like snakes, rats or cats!!!!

@bubbleyes72: I love cats..... They keep the snakes, rats and lizards away... At least mine does!!!!  I am more afraid of rats, mice or lizards than I am of a snakes.....

@GoldenGirl:  Lizards bother you but snakes don't?   We have a bunch of the little green lizards (geckos?) around our house.  Inevitably, we find one in the house every once in a while.  They don't bother me at all.  Since they eat insects, I just catch them and put them back outside.... IF they survive the dogs playing with them.
