Maybe I should keep my eyes peeled! I haven't run into many people panhandling. But I think it's my sweats, ball cap and having not showered --- and my unkempt look that keeps them at bay. I must blend in quite well! 4951

I suck. I literally just got panhandelled on facebook mobile by a friend of a friend of a friend... she was apparently out of gas somewheres on i25 and she was needing to get back home blahblahblah. I didn't really believe her to be honest... its pretty convenient to run out of gas and just so happen to be by a store that has western union inside. and she was typing a lot so i'm pretty sure I just helped someones drug addiction.... A few months ago I was on the trails on the opposite side of the new Kroger and there was a homeless camp about 15-20 yards into the woods. I had a gopro on and have video of the site. There were multiple guys sitting around with camping tents and tarps hung for shade.  After this encounter I was at the Exxon at Northpark and 59 and was approached by one of the guys from the site aggressively asking for money. Here's a link to the gopro vid from a year ago. They are on the right at the 54-56 second mark. http://youtu.be/J7VEEJyoIS8 4951

I have never been a pan handler, but, I know of people who were related to them. One was a multi millionaire in Galleria who lost all his money. Another is the brother of a very influential business woman. Many neighborhoods in the Houston area have pan handlers. I see them in Atascocita too. It seems harsh to say they are all on drugs, 4951

Here the officer informed me that this same people had been caught previously stealing from cars, the man raids the cars while she and child/children beg for money. My heart dropped to have learned this. 4951

I might be wrong here, but I really think the families are a part of either a local cult or some type of gypsy family.  I have seen them as well and they are well dressed (not rags), look clean, and can spell.  They are obviously making money or they would move on.  I think the kid thing gets to a lot of people and they give more readily.  I saw a woman with a baby and a few other kids in front of the Walmart in Porter begging and several people stopped to give her money; sadly people who looked as if they needed the money themselves.  However, statistically, people with less money give more.  I guess they see themselves or what they could be.  I don't know.  My husband and I give out gift cards to strangers (not panhandlers) at Christmas (it is our gift to each other) and I know someone here on KU was collecting for the Star of Hope.  Pick what you want to give to, but don't support a cult or gypsies!

I'm the lady taking donations to take to Star of Hope.

I am always amazed at how many people hand money to these people - Texans are very generous if not very smart.I was disillusioned early on by a raggedy dressed women who used to beg in front of a local mall, leaning on a crutch.  One day I happened to catch her heading out at the end of the day. She headed to a very recent model car, with her dry cleaning hanging in the back. No crutch, no limp.  No more money from me. 4951

"i don't see any reason to get so upset.  if it offends you then like nancy reagan said 'just say no" "and the scout troops "@ ProblemAgainYour first statement is easy enough to say if one is large enough to overpower an agressive panhandler should they turn it into a physical confrontation. For the majority of women, it is quite unnerving to be approached by a filthy person with enough crazy to actually choose homelessness. And yes, it is a choice because they can go to a shelter, etc.I have never seen Scouts panhandling. They get permission from the stores to sell cookies. They go door to door selling items. They never ask for monetary donations. 4951
