I find it interesting that she spent a lifetime living off family money most of which she didn't earn , But doesn't want her son to do the same. Sounds kind of hypocritical. 4951

@marybees1: Maybe she found out that having wealth handed to you was not as great as many think.

This is an obviously difficult decision to have to make(spoil the kid or let them earn it)...Reading many of your posts and reasonings has motivated me to try and help people facing this dire situation...Therefore, I'm offering anyone trapped in this nightmare an easy way out...Do you have money that may get in the way of you and/or your loved one's growth? By simply directing those proceeds(via Wills, cashier's checks, cash, checks, IOU, etc.) to the "Improve EddyFree's Life Fund", you can make a difference in your child's life!...You will have peace of mind knowing they won't be able to touch it EVER and so it won't "stunt" their growth in life...If you act now, I'll be glad to offer this service at absolutely NO CHARGE for the next 50 years or so...In fact, if you act later, I'll still offer it at no charge!...Just my way of trying to be a good citizen by helping people out... 4951

My sister and I will not inherit anything from our parents.  A trust is set up for my dd.  She is the sole beneficiary.  My husband and I will have no rights to the trust(which is how we wanted it). 4951

As someone that is a STRONG believer in passing on wealth to children, etc., I find a hard concept to understand by not leaving your children anything (unless of course, as mentioned, they are into drugs, etc). For me, it seems like some kind of vindictiveness, and that's just me. I can understand not wanting to leave them everything at one time, or setting up a trust, or something like that, but the money I make and the success I have will in part, be because I want my children to live better lives, etc. It just doesn't make sense that I would not leave anything behind for them. I mean it really goes beyond my comprehension. Like someone else said earlier, it's their money, they can do what they want, but as for me when the time comes, everything will be going to my children, every single dime and penny, and whatever precious items I wish to pass on. 4951

In this article from CNN, Anderson Cooper discusses the fact that his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, made it clear to him from a young age that he would not inherit the family fortune.  She expected him to make his own way in the world.  This is quite interesting because to my understanding Warren Buffett made the same decision in regards to his children.  My question is do you agree with this, or do you think they are doing their children wrong by not passing the wealth down to future generations?http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2014/04/02/no-vanderbilt-inheritance-for-anderson-cooper/?iref=obnetwork

@rocket: I respect them for it....  I think they are already given a great opportunity by the family name.....  I am not sure I could do it though...  I think I wold pass on at least some of my wealth to the kids as long as they were responsible and not losers...  But I may raise them with the assumption they are not getting anything so they well get of their **** and make something of themselves..

I hope everyone here that doesn't want their kids to get everything at once has it all in writing. Even that life insurance you have that would go to them needs to be set up how you want. 4951

@BooBear: You make a good point.  I have learned that as far as Courts are concerned, if it isn't in writing it doesn't exist.  Judges don't want to hear what was intended.  Writing your wishes down saves a lot of time and headache for those left behind.
