I just wanted to recommend the photographer we used awhile back for our family photos.  She did a great job & she's very down to earth & willing to do anything !  Her prices are comparable to what you are seeing, maybe a little less.  She met us in old Humble and we had a blast taking pictures.  I will try and get a few of them up on here ...  Here's her website, her name is Leigh.  www.fresh-light-phot ography.com/  4951

I am a newborn photographer almost exclusively, but I'm not replying to give myself a plug. I let my clients refer me instead of doing it myself, and it looks like one of them already did EmoticonI want to give you a tiny bit of insight into the high prices you are seeing, so maybe it will help you understand. A photographer who charges $650 is not getting a $650 paycheck at the end of the day. That photographer is a licensed business, above the table with taxes, carries insurance, and uses high quality professional gear and vendors for their products. They also maintain a professional website, printed materials, professional organizations, new props, and invest in additional learning opportunities. Many are also self employed and have to pay their own health insurance costs. None of these things come cheap and their prices have to account for them. After you take out taxes and all their costs, they may have about $300 left. But then you have to think about the time.1 hour emailing back and forth or meeting with a potential client1 hour prepping props and ideas for your session1 hour drive time to and from session4 hours shooting1 hour uploading images1 hours culling images3 hours editing (This is what it takes me for a session. Some are way more, some are less)1 hour meeting with client to order1 hour prepping images for ordering1 hour receiving order and packaging1 hour driving to and from delivering orderThis comes out to $18/hr. Not bad, but its not rolling in dough either. That is under 40k a year.Of course there are photographers who will do the job for $100 and give you the CD. But 9 times out of 10, they are not a licensed, insured businesses who pays their taxes. They are also making peanuts for their work and will not be able to sustain a long term business at those prices without doing 10 sessions a week (which would burn out most people). Chances are, if you compare the work of one of these photographers with a true professional, especially one who specializes in newborns, you will see a big difference in the quality of their work. I know personally, I would never trust my newborn baby with anyone who didn't know exactly what they were doing and weren't operating a legal business. Not everyone can afford $650 for newborn portraits, and that is ok and I am sure you will find someone who will be able to do it at the price you can afford. My goal was just to educate about the prices you are seeing so maybe you won't be so put off. That person behind the camera isn't a millionaire. They are just a mom trying to make a decent living for her family. 4951

@leighzlou: I appreciate your insight.  But i new most of that already.  I have 4 friends who are photographers and they all have seconds jobs to pay the bills.  I know they are aren't millionaires.  I know they can't even afford their own prices!I also know what I can and can't afford and have to stick within a budget.  Emoticonhotos are a great way to capture memories but i just can't see buying photos on a CD for the price that  I can buy a new appliance for my home.  Just my humble opinion.  I actually have found a photographer of 17 years that has taken college classes in photography that does newborn sessions for $200-$250 CD included.  Her photography looks great by my standards.  Www.capturingyou.net

@leighzlou:Also, about one year ago i took a chance on a new pet photographer who is on this board.  And i was tottally impressed with the edited images she gave me on CD.  I got so many compliments from family and friends that see her images hanging on my walls.  Some people just have the raw talent for the job and just need customers to give them a chance even though they don't have insurance, pay taxes, etc when they first start out. I am considering giving her a chance to do some newborn photos for me with my dogs.   4951

Totally understand that a budget is a budget. My family has a strict budget just like many and we have to pick which things are important to us.My whole purpose is just to try to move away from saying that $650 for a CD of digital images was outrageous. It is expensive and it is not for everyone's budget. It is a luxury item just like a day at the spa. Some people want the extra pampering, serene environment, fluffy robes, and personal attention, some just go to the mall nail salon, and some just paint their own fingernails because it isn't a priority to them. The spa isn't ripping anyone off though. They provide a higher level of service and their customers appreciate that and want to pay for it. I would still caution you against using any business handling your newborn that is not licensed and insured though, regardless of talent. Talent has nothing to do with it if, God forbid, and accident were to happen. Accidents unfortunately are happening more and more too because new photographers aren't taking (and often times don't even know) the proper safety Emoticonrecautions when posing a newborn.  4951

@leighzlou: Thank you for wording your responses so well, I'm a business owner & feel the EXACT same way about other people offering pet sitting services on this site. It's frustrating because you don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers, but on the other hand most people aren't running a legit business either & will not be held responsible if/when something goes terribly wrong. It's very expensive & time consuming to handle carrying costs (insurance, professional orgs, website, advertising, gas!, honesty bond, etc) but we do it because we're passionate about our work & hopefully people see that.

End rant. 4951

You don't HAVE to pay an arm & a leg. I had DD's newborn pics done at picture people & they came out great but you should go to Portrait Innovations in kingwood! That's where I've gone for years. Just had DD's cheerleading pic taken there a couple of weeks ago. They have gorgeous newborn samples in their profile books & have such cute backdrops & props! And they are really reasonably priced!!! 4951
