So much depends on the child and the neighborhood.  The child must be responsible and trustworthy and the neighborhood must be safe.  4951

Girls, after they are married. My DW says she still doesn't trust me home alone, so maybe never for boys.

We might be married to the same woman.  I could clean the house, do the dishes, laundry, wash the dogs while she was out with the girls and I think she'd still be suspicious that I was sitting on the sofa without pants on...ummm....again.  LOL 4951

LOL.  My child is very mature for 12.  I was going to start with 30 min errand runs.   I appreciate all the opinions and advice.  We live in a great neighborhood with a lot of SAHM and retired folk.  I can't look in any direction from my house and see a house with nobody home.  We watch each other houses all the time.  My child keeps a cell phone on their physical self at all times and the alarm is set and the dogs bark.    When I was growing up I was the oldest and at 10/11 was left at home for long amounts of time in charge of the two younger.  I would never do that to kid.  I did not want to give to much in formation in my post bc these post never go away and what if I gave out my location on another post.  It was not to be sly in any way.  Also I was asking bc I like to follow the law not bc I was unsure in any way of my child's ability to handle situations.   My child knows and practices self defense, Hup Kedo (throwing techniques like throwing an adult who has you in a choke hold)  and Tae Kwon Do at high levels against adults. Again thanks very much and I think I have given out all the information I will concerning my situation.  I am not comfortable at all with giving more and not sure I should have posted my child's age as it is.  But I do realize you guys are good people trying to understand the situation and give the best advice you can.  So Thank  you.  4951

Thank you.  I did not realize there was no age.  I have dogs and an alarm system.  My kid is in jr. high.  I was concerned that if I ran an errand and for some reason the alarm was activated calling the police I could get in trouble for neglect.   So what are some opinions on the age for kids to stay alone at home during 6am to 7pm or 8pm?And what about 8pm to Midnight?
My oldest started staying home in 6th grade.  We started out with small trips away for about 30 minutes.  7th grade, we have stretched it out a little more.  It all depends on the child as well.  No cooking or answering the phone (unless it's us calling)  No answering the door or going outside.  We set the alarm and bring the dogs inside. 4951

you can leave a child at home when they reach 14 y/o they can also be responsible for another at that age.  this is the standard that law enforcement uses. 4951

really?.........why is CPS and other child authorities telling people other information? Where did you get this information because I like that way better than everyone being told any age............LOL Plus they give out babysitting license to those who take the course , or atleast they use to as young as 12. 4951

Hope you didn't think I was judging, I didn't want to answer for the same reason you didn't want to add info. Would have felt terrible if I said hey CPS says any age and next day I hear some 3 year old in Kingwood was kidnapped while mommy left her alone to go party........LOL(not funny but you get the picture) I think this question enters every parents mind at some time or another. When I was a kid 12 year olds were babysitting other kids, now a days we are afraid what might happen. Also I found it weird that CPS told me that a child may babysit at a younger age then they may stay at home with siblings, Said the law was in place to keep children from being forced to watch their sibblings everyday........not sure how true this is........:-/ 4951

I thought you were concerned about what you said @Burnsway.    Thanks for your input.  It really does help to know what other people are doing.  4951
