When I asked our American MD about giving our Dd this milk, she herself had a freaking cow, lol.  Went on and on about unsafe it was.  While I can appreciate the concern for health risks due to unpasteurized milk, I look at our food supply and all the stupid chemicals we eat and we're way off track.

@MarT: Agree.  We eat horrible in this country.  Whenever I go to Europe (been a few years) I eat dairy products like they are going out of style.  So much better.  why?  They don't burn the crap out of the milk.
Pasteurization is a good thing, just not the high heat (ultra) method.  But of course, mass producers love it since it provides for a longer shelf life and is quicker to get through the assembly line.  Too bad it tastes like ****. 4951

So, does that mean that the organic milk at HEB (HEB brand and even others) that has a far out sell by date is pasteurized by ultra high heat?  The sell by date for regular milk is much shorter, just curious. 4951

Kroger's has organic pasteurized. I use it to make yogurt. The cooked UHT stuff doesn't work as well for yogurt making. JJ 4951

@OdinWe lived in Germany (West Germany, at the time) in the late 80's, in a tiny little town.  Our next door neighbor was a dairy farmer, we could hear his cows kicking the wall, our house was build right next to the barn.  The little German kids would come every morning with their little metal pitchers and get fresh, raw, warm milk.

@MarT:   Here in America, in our efforts to make our food much "safer", we have made our digestive systems very sensitive to common bacteria and byproducts.  That's why we cannot eat some of the foods in other countries nor drink their water/milk/etc.  By eliminating most of the bacteria from our food and drink sources, we have weakened our immune system in it's ability to handle them.   However, our digestive systems REQUIRE certain strains of bacteria to properly digest food.  People in those countries have grown up consuming those products and their digestive/immune systems can handle them.  In America, we end up buying "probiotic" products to give us the healthy bacteria that we are no longer getting from our normal foods. And as you mention, we supposedly purify our food from bacteria but load it with antibiotics, pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals to prolong shelf life.  Some of the processing that we do to foods also reduces the nutritional value of those foods.Sometimes, I think we've gone too far in trying to create "safer" foods.

@Retired_Engineer: Also, as someone who has to eat "cleaner" the foods that have not been altered, are far more expensive.  My unrefined coconut sugar, for example, costs 4x as much as regular sugar.  My Organic almond and coconut milk is twice as much as regular.  I don't think my family could afford it if everyone had to eat that way.

@MarT: yes.  Horizon, etc.  Ultra pasteurized.  Didn't used to be, but it is now.  Makes it worthless as far as being natural and organic.  You probably can tell that I'm rather passionately opposed to burning milk.  Also makes it hard to digest.  The "lactose" intolerance problems many have?  Try raw or low heat milk.  Ultra destroys enzymes that help us to digest milk.
I've checked all of the milk in the area and it's all ultra pasteurized now.  Even promised land is (at least the batch I checked).   ARGGHHH!! 4951

It's not natural to drink the milk of another species. What's really strange is not only do humans drink the milk of another species, but we do so well beyond infancy. No other animal does that.

@jj17: Thanks!  I'll check that out.  I very rarely go to Kroger so never checked there.  (just out of my way)

@Odin: Just find a wet nurse and get it straight from the source.

@Okiedokie:  At one time, people didn't need to pay extra for "organic" foods because everything was organic.  I remember drinking warm milk at my grandparent's house that came straight from the cow (although I prefer my milk cooled).  In fact, I think the only processed foods in their house was coffee, flour, baking powder and maybe a few other things.  Everything else was as natural and as organic as it got.  They raised chickens for eggs and chickens, pigs for meat and fat/grease, a vegetable garden, etc.

@BooBear: You jest, but lots of other health benefits come from getting milk on tap.

I get your obsession @Odin, my hubby and one son clearly have lactose issues.  Hubby in particular has food sensitivities, not allergies, to gluten and lactose.  There was a long list of sensitivities from his testing, but these two things clearly make him miserable.  He's doesn't have celiac's disease, but feels sooo much better when he doesn't eat gluten.  Funny side note, he ate pasta and pizza in Italy, didn't bother him.  Makes me wonder about the type of grain, gmo stuff???  Ds really only has problems if he eats too much diary at one sitting.Me, nothing bothers me, but after watching a few documentaries we try to eat better.  I never really cooked from pre-packaged food due to cost and a bit larger family, but that also meant I was looking for deals.  Now, we're trying to eat grass fed beef,  although the flavor is a bit too beefy for me, free range chicken, organic produce.  I don't always do great, but I'm trying.   Sometimes the cost overwhelms me, lol.  Especially organic peppers and cucs.    4951

No doubt BUT I'm not sure you could trust the source for cleanliness just based on the sites where you would find that "tap" 4951
