I'm moving there spring/summer, and presently in Denver, CO, I have milk delivery of milk, bread, etc. from a dairy once a week and it is so much better than milk from the store.  Does Houston have anything like that? If not, I will greatly miss it! Also, what about Schwan's? 4951

We had milk deliveries when I was young.  I didn't know anyone was still doing that!  If you find anyone that does around here, let us know! 4951

My husband says they probably don't have it since it gets so hot there and it wouldn't be good to have it sit in the milk box through the night, but here in the summer they have us use coolers and they just throw blocks of ice in. Seems like that would work there . . . I need my Royal Crest!  lol 4951

@Thumper100: I looked at their website, and Schwan's delivers to Kingwood.

Yeah I've seen the Schwan's truck lumbering around town. Don't know of any delivery.  There really is no need for it as you are rarely more than a couple of miles from any of a number of full fledged supermarkets almost anywhere in Kingwood.    4951

The milkman and the Fuller brush man are all past history. I haven't heard of a milk delivery service like that since I was a boy. I liked to see the Fuller Brush man because he would always sneak me a big chaw of chewing tobacco when my mom wasn't looking. 4951

@Thumper100: That would be great, but we don't have anything like that here.  However, there are several co-ops (organic meat co-op and a veggie co-op) that you might consider joining.
I've been looking for raw milk (not goat milk, that's easy to get here).   4951

Is it legal for raw milk to be sold here?  In Colo, pretty much the only way to get it was to buy a share of a cow, so it was your milk.   Adding, I'd be happy to find pasteurized, non-homogenized. 4951

@MarT: Yes, but it is restricted.  Dairy farmers have to be certified and it's hard to get that.   They can sell directly.  There are a few around, but they are a bit of a drive.  Not terribly convenient for weekly use.I would still pasteurize the milk myself, but would use low heat pasteurization.  My issue is with the flash pasteurization that is used; reduces the nutritional value of milk, creates carcinogens, increase glutamates (my big issue) and ruins the flavor.
Anyone know where to get low heat pasteurized milk?  Hell, even the "organic" milk in stores is ultra (high heat) pasteurized.  (used be more options, but they've gone away) 4951

@OdinWe lived in Germany (West Germany, at the time) in the late 80's, in a tiny little town.  Our next door neighbor was a dairy farmer, we could hear his cows kicking the wall, our house was build right next to the barn.  The little German kids would come every morning with their little metal pitchers and get fresh, raw, warm milk.  When I asked our American MD about giving our Dd this milk, she herself had a freaking cow, lol.  Went on and on about unsafe it was.  While I can appreciate the concern for health risks due to unpasteurized milk, I look at our food supply and all the stupid chemicals we eat and we're way off track.    4951
