Can anyone recommend a good, reasonable vet in the KW area?   I'd prefer a vet that offers the no-frills approach to caring for my three rescues. (I know when my dogs are sick so I don't need to pay for the annual exam to tell me they look fine, could lose a few lbs, etc.)  I need a professional to help me when they ARE sick and to offer lowest cost services for shots, dental, and exams when necessary.I'd been a long-time, happy customer of Eastex Vet Clinic on Woodland Hills, prior to their joining the VitalPet umbrella.  Then their rates went skyhigh while their customer service took a nosedive.  A co-worker recommended the Huffman vet and I've been happy with their rates so far..but they aren't convenient to KW and they are not open on the weekends.  I've heard good things about Glade Valley on North Park.  Can anyone help? 4951

I don't know about your specific question as most vets will want a once a year check up but I can make a few comments. VCA is corporate and even if the vets are great their pricing is almost double what I pay else where. Loop 494 vet has reasonable pricing as well as dr. Ross in humble. 4951

Walgreens provides a clinic about every other month in Kingwood.  The prices are great & I have been very pleased.  Also, The Mobil Vet Clinic comes to the N Woodlands Hill pool about every 3 months & they are good too.  I've used both & been very pleased.  If you pet is sck, you need to go to a vet-Dr Ross in Humble. 4951

Thanks all.  I suppose I'll just stay put for now as I think my pups will get great care at the Huffman vet and I'll sure save $$ by NOT going to Vital Pet clinics.  4951

I loved Dr. Kelly at Eastex. He was so kind and gentle with the animals. but when he moved to VitalPet I had to go somewhere else because of their pricing. Plus, they would give me an estimate, then when I checked out the cost was much higher. I use Northpark Animal Hospital now. Dr. Hebert and Dr. Williams are great. 4951

Dr. Kelly at Eastex was my vet for many years!  I loved and trusted him and really hated to leave, for those reasons.  However, his health has declined and I don't think he's working that much anymore.  I had a difficult time even getting appts with him.  Before Dr. Kelly, I had Dr. Keese who recently opened his own clinic after moving back to the area.  I've ALWAYS vetted my dogs and will continue to do so but am not willing or able to pay exhorbitant prices for an impersonal doctor to tell me my pup 'looks great but could lose a few lbs'.. or 'appears healthy but should have a dental cleaning ($600+) in the near future'..or he 'looks great for his age but now that he's a 'senior' we recommend geriatric testing'. I appreciate their knowledge and experience but I think the industry, especially with the Vital Pet explosion, is breeding greed.I'll get off my soapbox, for now.  Thanks for allowing me to vent. 4951

Lonestar vet is great...and is our main vet ,butfor LOW prices on dentals,shots,ect. prices at Crosby Vet cannot be beaten. No frills,verybusy,but thevets are good and care about the animals. Surgery dates hard to get quick because so cheap. Had a bad experience trying to get a quick surgery.they were booked..BUT I went back..My dog had dental cleaningl,shots,fecal test,hworm test, AND sold me the hworm meds for a year...all for like $250!! Would have been like $600 at Lonestar. They did a great job on all that routine stuff. My hubby was soo happy saving all that money since we tend to spend lots at the vet. Emoticon)Plus,they got Brownie points for being extra sweet to myl lil man. They had a nurse bring him out in a baby blanket AS soon as I walked in because she knew he was a rescued dog with severe anxiety....plus she said she had never seen a cuter longhaired mini dachshund. Emoticon) 4951

@Love2Run

Personally, I love an honest vet who doesn't sugar coat, that shows that they truly care about the well being of their patient.

An overweight pet can bring on a myriad of health problems and some can get serious.

Annual bloodwork for senior dogs is a very wise and proactive thing to do, even in dogs of any age because so many issues can be caught early on and you can help your dog have a more prolonged and better quality of life if you catch a problem early on.

As a woman I get a yearly well woman exam..the one year I skipped it I had a tumor growing inside my ovary. Guess what. I didn't realize it UNTIL it had gotten to the size of a grapefruit and I could see and feel it when I lied on my back! I could have avoided a painful surgery if I had caught it early on.

I also get annual bloodwork to make sure all my levels are in a good range.

I'm sure you go to the dentist to maintain your oral health too. We do these things for ourselves and well-being, why should it be any different for our 4 legged companions who we want to be around for a long time ?

Sorry about the long rant, I am a vet tech student and pet health is important to me Emoticon 4951

 We used Dr. Hebert at Northpark  a few times. He knows his stuff,but he was really pushy  about us spending more money... He got mad because my hubby and I were not wanting to operate lil man's knees. He even made the vet tech come in and "sell us on it" one more time. When we said "No, we don't want to."..she walked out and we could hear him fussing at her through the door...I felt like I was a used car lot getting pushed into a car deal and never went back. Meanwhile, Dr. Bryant at Lonestar Vet does not make us feel like that or the vets Crosby either. 4951

@ xjamiex:  And vets all across the area would say hooray to you for your posting, and I do appreciate your input.  I'm all in favor of vetting my family members and will continue to do so.  What I'm NOT in favor of is paying inflated prices for same.  If you compare what VitalPet is charging versus the vets that haven't jumped on board, you'll find it all pretty interesting.  I'm searching for trusted, knowledgeable vets that offer reasonably-priced services.  I don't feel the need to pay a vet to tell me my dog is a bit overweight and the possible ramifications of same.  I know it.  Regarding the geriatric blood work, my rescue mix that has been with me most of his life (he's 16 now) has lived a long, full life. Nuff said.  I will certainly schedule dental cleaning for my pups but I don't believe it's necessary to pay $600 for it.Again,  I'm all for veterinary medicine and I wish you much success in your future!  Just don't forget about us poor souls that can't afford big corporate pricing....and our beloved pets that need you. 4951

I am one of those poor souls too Emoticon I have 3 dogs and no job. I utilize about 4 different vet clinics to cut corners with cost..I would never waste money at a vitalpet facility and I do vaccinations and get prevention at a low cost clinic bc it's the cheapest. The clinic I use for that has a 9 dollar office fee Emoticon They also offer 75 dollar dentals. I would never have a speuter or dental done at a clinic that price gouges. I've been in rescue for 6 years and have always been low income so I know how to make owning multiple dogs work and get them taken care of.

Believe me, I understand! I can't stand money hungry vets who want us to pay for their children's college. Of course i know that there are unethical vets out there, just like our human doctors. There is a difference and I know it. I'm just explaining the pros of being proactive with our pets health. I would never put a really senior dog under anesthesia for a teeth cleaning. That's a health risk in itself. 4951
