@Retired_Engineer: These ( I use to sell them when I was in the candy business down in New Orleans):
The image on the left is the "old skool" design from the 70-80's and the current one  ........

@mardigrasman:  I had never heard of them.  Thanks.

Lived in Baton Rouge for almost 10 years.  Had friends that were from NO and we spent the majority of our weekends there, @mardigrasman.   How you liking Texas so far?  The think I miss the most are the bakeries.  There aren't any here.  Well there are some, but they totally suck, and couldn't stay open in LA for 24 hours.I miss Baum's for birthday cakes, Ambrosia for king cakes, if I couldn't get to Randazzo's.I miss the fresh made crossants, the butt kicking donuts.  I just miss all the foodEmoticon

@Fallon:  I grew up in Baker (just north of BR).  After college, we moved to LaPlace (upriver from New Orleans) and lived there for about 15 years.  My father grew up in Reserve (near LaPlace).  You are correct about the food!  I miss being able to get great hot French bread at any time!

@Fallon: Randazzo's Rules!!!!! I grew up eating there King Cakes from Chalmette ( my hometown)  I love Texas so far, but there are times ( especially around Mardi Gras) that I do miss southeast Louisiana, not much mind you.https://www.randazzokingcake.com/ 4951

Get out Retired_Engineer, I use to work at Baker Elementary.  Loved the small town feel of the area.  Didn't love being there after dark...lol

@mardigrasman, One of my good friends was a crew member with a group in Chalmette and we would go to that parade every year to rack up.  Had the best time in Chalmette ever.  Always a good time.  And never the tourist that we had in NO.

One of my coworkers grew up in LaPlace.  And one coworker grew up in NO in the "Nightwad".  Well I thought  that was what he was saying for 2 years.  lol  He was actually saying the 9th Ward.  He was a true bad a@#.  Not like the wanna be bad a%$ you see here.   But you have to be to stay alive in the 9th ward.

Loved being able to walk into any dive and know that the food was going to be holy cow amazing.  Except for the muffalato's.  Never could eat those.  But the crawfish pies, oh yeah baby.

@Fallon: I did sales calls in Baker back in the mid-90's and once a shop owner told me the same thing about getting out of Baker before dark ( he also had a piece/gun under his shirt that he kept handy to protect himself). My last place of employment in New Orleans before Katrina was in the 9 th ward ( upper--adjacent to the 7 th ward) . 4951

Yikes you needed an armored vehicle and an automatic weaponEmoticon

I had an officer in Baker tell me that I should have a concealed weapons permit.  When we moved to VA, it was a huge culture shock.  Well we were close to Hampton Roads//Norfolk, so I always had a place to go when I missed the crime.  lol
@Fallon: it's funny that you mention that because there were several employees ( not me) who had a piece (gun) strapped to them ( leg holster), seeing as our location in the  upper 9 th ward was 5 minutes away from both the desire and florida housing projects ( there were times when we would hear gunfire @ 4 or 5 am while filling orders/recieving freight). 4951

Ky. has the best food ever , especially bakery goods, my uncle owned a bakery in Cincinnati & he made the best  glazed donuts & custard filled rolls ever. His cakes & pies were made fresh every 3 hours & by the end of day that always eneded at 4 pm there was nothng left in the store windows , everything had been sold .
When I was a kid we use to go in the back of the store & eat the custard as it came out of the pump (LOL) the best was to have a hot buttered roll straight from the big ovens  with a cold glass of milk ...nothing like it  since . Those were the good ole days for sure. 4951
