Can you really stay at the Y?

@Zokomo:

Not anymore but they use to be sort of a shelter known for young men getting together for a little fun. They have evolved from the Young Mens Christian Association. 4951

I see those ten dollar a month gym ads on TV (fitness connect, fitness 19 or something like that,) There are a bunch in The Woodlands. They are basic gyms usually without all the pools etc. I will pay more, but don't like locked in contracts or huge registration fees Emoticon

@Blueglass: I think we pay $49 a month at Snap Fitness for a family membership. It has 24 hour access, and there is no contract and no sign up fee.

We love Gold's!!! It's $19/mo per person, but for my husband & me plus our 8 year old's youth membership, we pay $55/mo total for the 3 of us. We were at 24hr Fitness before & paid $35 a piece plus $20 for DD's daycare, they didn't even offer youth memberships or classes!! We did the 2 week trial at Lifetime & it really is just way too overpriced. They wanted like, $120/mo for our family of 3. You really can't beat Gold's. It's clean, offer great classes, they fix machines very quickly, great staff. I can't say enough good things about Gold's. They usually have a $10/mo promo around New Year's, too. 4951

Thanks for thinking of me! I actually work full-time remotely, but I may be able to go some time. I just joined Golds and plan to hit up my free lunch breaks. It's hard when your whole team is on EST, so my lunches tend to be at 11a! 4951

11-gauge steel power rack purchased from Amazon for $500 three years ago plus Olympic weight set that I already had, so down to about $15 per month.  Can workout at a time of my choosing when home.  Self taught linear progression strength training (now using Wendler's 5/3/1 routine to accommodate track workouts) using squats, bench press, overhead press, deadlift, and power cleans, with Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength and Practical Programming for Strength Training.  Will be down to under $10 per month by end of year.  No TVs, no juice bars, no "trainers" making sure I'm using all of the right machines, music of my choosing at a volume that I choose, don't frown on the use of chalk, no rows of cardio machines.  I have mountain bike with road tires that I ride on recovery days and will occasionally knock out 30-40 mile rides on - not a lot as far as cycling goes.  I hope to get a nice road bike again some day, but it's not in my budget right now.  It's been a great investment really and one that I can continue to grow and learn with.  One learns a lot about physiology, nutrition, and a bit of psychology when you make such an investment and take the initiative, as well as learning how to motivate and drive one's self.  My equipment is in our garage - non-air conditioned, of course.  So one has to be fairly motivated to workout in the summer out there.Maybe this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but don't be afraid to explore these types of options.  Take a personal interest in your health, because none of the globo gyms are going to - it's not a match for their business model. 4951

Memorial Hermann Hospital NE has a program for the community that is very inexpensive. It's not $10, but it's reasonable and you can stop at any time without penalty.  Their gym has all the machines that the mega gyms have and there trainer will show you how to use each one of them when you first join.  www.memorialhermann. org/locations/northe ast/wellness-center/ 4951
