Houston ranks No. 2 among the top 25 cities for dog bites on postal workers, a new survey reports.

The statistics on dog bites are part of a joint collaborative awareness effort between the U.S. Postal Service , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , the medical and veterinary community, and the insurance industry. May 19-25 has been designated as National Dog Bite Prevention Week.
Nationally, 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs, with children accounting for more than half of all victims. More than 5,600 postal carriers were attacked last year, while between 12 and 20 people die from dog attacks annually.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, the top three cities for dog attacks in 2011 were Los Angeles, with 83 bites; San Diego, with 68 bites; and Houston, where 47 postal workers were attacked. The Postal Service spent more than $1 million on medical expenses from dog attacks last year.
On the financial side of the equation: Dog attacks accounted for more than one-third of all homeowner insurance liability claims paid out in 2011.

USA Today reports that nearly $479 million in dog bite claims were paid by all insurance companies in 2011, up from $413 million in 2010. State Farm Insurance paid more than $109 million on about 3,800 dog bite claims nationwide last year, USA Today reports.
State Farm ranked the top 10 states for dog bite claims, and Texas ranked No. 3 with $5.1 million spent on 219 claims.

- It's a little known fact that smartest animal is a pig. Scientists say if pigs had thumbs and a language, they could be trained to do simple manual labor. They give you 20-30 years of loyal service and then at their retirement dinner you can eat them
