Ok, never mind about the Comfortis. It is just as expensive as the Trifexis. What to do? What to do? 4951

@Zokomo....I actually use a (designated) hair comb to ensure that it's gettin' where it need to be!....I find that helps quite a bit, with no fuss or hassle at all.....  4951

I read up on the Trifexis & with all the problems it said it could cause I did not switch like my vet wanted me to do . My 3 poodles have been on Heart-guard  for years & it works so why switch ?  I use Frontline Plus  & it takes care of fleas , ticks, eggs , mosquitoes , etc. My dogs have no problems at all & I stick with the old saying...".if it isn't broke don't fix it ." 4951

Before I moved from KW to Wichita (not knowing how long it'd be before I found a new vet, I purchased a 6mos supply of Trifexis for BOTH my pups.  Of course, we get here and it makes my little rescue so sick that I decide it's not worth it.  I'm stuck with $200 (11 mos) worth of pills that I can't sell back to my Huffman vet and none of the local vets will buy them.  So I called the mfr of Trifexis and they're refunding my money.  I was shocked they agreed to do that (and, of course, I'm still waiting for the reimbursement) but happy.  I donated the remaining pills to the Wichita Humane Society.  They were happy to get them! 4951

When we moved here, the house was flea ridden, the yard was flea ridden.I had some work to do on the house before we moved in, so I bombed the hell out if it and killed all the fleas.The dogs got here and got fleas right off. They were on Sentanal, so it was to be expected.But after about a month or so, no more fleas.They do get a onesie or twosie when they go out of the yard, but they die off and life is good. We switched to trefexis when the factory issue happened, and have been on it ever since.  4951

Lonestar vet in Atascocita now offers a 12 week flea and tick pill called Bravecto.

And also an injection for heartworm prevention called ProHeart6 - to be injected every 6 months.l!

I think each is about $30-40. Can't wait to try both. 4951

Do you have any of your dogs enrolled in the monthly preventative care plans at Lone Star? 4951

@Zokomo: I do and its well worth it IMO especially with new or young dogs. But you cant cancel, it comes up for renewal every year and you can cancel at that time, but if you cancel at any other time you have to pay all discounts back. Even if the dog dies I think. It does not cover HW preventative and most medicines though. It covers all basic  like vaccinations, teeth cleaning, blood test, heartworm test....etc. Depending on what plan you pick more is covered and you get discounts on many things.I have pushed and moved the numbers every which way and no doubt the plans save you plus he is a good vet also. I have 2 dogs on it. I was about to put Roxy on it when she passed. There is a sign up fee of 75 though but you dont have to pay that every year as long as you renew within 30 days of the plans expiration date.

@Zokomo:

Both mine are. Last year they were on the plan that included dentals and bloodwork. I'll do that one every other year. This year no dental or bloodwork. 4951

Best part of the plan is no office visit charge. And I think they really do try to fit you in if something comes up. 4951

@Burnsway: I'm gonna try the flea stuff first.  I have been putting off applying the advantage.  My dogs don't like it and I don't either.

Is there a better alternative? My dogs all have long hair, so it is hard to give the Frontline.

@Zokomo: I get that it is hard to apply to dogs with long hair-I have 2 shepherd mixes.  I was using the comboguard but still had to put Frontline on for ticks.  I switched to Heartguard and Frontline-my dogs are very active and play in wooded areas though.  Our yard backs up to woods so tick protection is important.

@OkieDokieI was checking prices of all these things....really Sentinel is the best deal.Heartguard is not that expensive, but Frontline is out of this world expensive!  Of course I guess you wouldn't really have to use it in the winter.I remember a thread about heartworm meds (in liquid form) that you could get from the Feed Store.  Does anybody know how I could find that thread?  It's been a couple of years.  I searched and couldn't find it. 4951
