Remember when you were young, the grocery store actually had groceries?  Now of course they had a few, very few odds and ends, such as a matchbox car or a broom etc.etc.  But their main purpose was to sell groceries and some general merchandise for around the house type stuff.  You weren’t going to get a spark plug there, but you might have been able to find a light bulb---maybe.  Now, 30 or so years later, we have Wal-Mart and everybody loves (most do, me not being one) The Wal-Mart.  The two main reasons people “love” this store is convenience and price.  Let’s start with convenience, you have to  walk farther than you would have had to drive in the “old days” to get all you need, the stores are HUGE.  Now, walking might not be all that bad, we could all use the exercise, but if you walk 4 miles in a fluorescent box and still can’t find what you are looking for, what’s the purpose?  If you wanted exercise you would have done it outside in the fresh air.  And how truly convenient is it to walk all that way and still not find anyone to help you?  And the likely hood of you finding a person to help is good, the problem lies with their ability/willingness to help.  Now we have all shopped there, we know where the majority of the associates abilities lie, but if you aren’t smart enough to help at least be willing and we all know the answer to that one don’t we?  Now on to the whole pricing thing, I have a theory on this as well.  If we as a society as a whole only bought what we needed instead of buying so much “garbage/junk/things we don’t need/trash etc.etc” we could still shop at the Mom and Pop stores that have customer service and the products we “need”.  Yes the prices are more, but if we as a whole are buying what we need instead of what we think we need we could easily afford it, our parents and their parents did it for years.  The big box has ruined everything American, yes there are lots of jobs to be had on the local front due to this giant, but at what price?  I would pay more, drive further and be happy having less choices of “cereal” to choose from if I could get the service that existed when I was growing up.  The rant stops here, nothing gained I suppose, but I do feel better, carry on……………… 4951

I'm not a Walmart fan but I do find myself in there for convenience from time to time, maybe once a month.  I'd be fine with no Walmart.  I really hate the Porter Walmart parking lot, I've never seen so many idiots behind the wheel at any one place in my whole life. 4951

When I was growing up, it was always K-Mart.If we did department store shopping, it was always K-Mart, specially for back-to-school.We had to drive clear across town (about 6 miles) to go to our local K-Mart.And mom made us listen out for those "blue light specials" we might need and can save a dollar or two more.Wal-Mart isn't such a stretch today from K-Mart.Also if no one liked Wal-Mart, they would not be in business. 4951

I LOVE WALMART!!   I can actually afford things there.  Also, I pretty much can get anything and everything I need/use at that store.  Now, granted...it can get annoyingly packed, but that is the price I am willing to pay to save money.  It is not so bad when you go at "off times"...and having no children, I can do that.  Emoticon 4951

I go to Walmart for most of my groceries. I price match too which saves me on average $75 every 2 weeks. Add that up and that's a huge savings for my family of 5. While I miss the old mom and pop grocery stores and such they are still thriving in the north. 4951

People think that Walmart has the cheapest prices, but I can always find better deals elsewhere. You just have to know where to look. 4951

@ganderif: But is it cheaper by the time you figure the gas to drive around to the different places?
Don't get me wrong, I am not a Wal-Mart fan, mostly because of the crowds and I usually don't feel safe in their parking lot. 4951
