@TXSunDvl: That's a little different.  They are bringing it to you so you don't have to leave the car.  Well worthy of a tip.

So do you tip the clerk who rings up your groceries and the person who bags them?Isn't that take out food too?

@Stealth83:

When they actually use too I would tip the kid that carried them out to my car. 4951

I usually will tip on a to go order just to make the total amount a nice round number. Let's say the bill is $7.20 I'll tip 2.80

I give them a couple of bucks. If they have to put together sauces, chips, etc etc that's worth a little something.I don't tip at donut shops, or places like that even though they have a tip jar. 4951

@scamp: Only one's with a tip jar that I tip are bartenders.  Otherwise, don't outwardly ask for a tip.

I will leave a small tip. The problem with most tipping, they go to the server,, on a to go order, there is really no service. So you cant tip the cook.I may leave a few dollars.I don't tip based on the food,, but I tip on the service. Crappy food could have good service and they may deserve it.  A good place may have crappy service,,, and no tip. 4951

I only tip on to go orders if the bartender has to handle it or if they bring it out to my car. In those cases I tip a couple of bucks because that's what I'd tip on a drink. 4951

In many restaurants, the person who took your order over the phone is the same person who is responsible for making sure the order is properly prepared, properly bagged, and has all the right condiments and utensils. They only have one chance to get it right. No reminders. No trips back to the table. It doesn't require as much time or attention as a dine-in order, but if they get it right and they are friendly over the phone and at the time of pick up, I will tip around 10%. 4951

I don't care how the food is delivered to me...take-out, delivery or at a table... I'm tipping. Those people have a job, they are working,  and they don't make much. I'm sure they can use every dollar they get.  4951

Didn't everyone say in another thread that they didn't think food service workers should make more money? It was also mentioned that most of these jobs should be held by teenagers, etc. and not meant to support a family. I get carryout because I want to save on the tip and the $5.00 charge for 2 sodas, I can eat at my leisure at home, there are no screaming babies or children and I can eat a little and then put it in the refrigerator for later. Isn't putting the sauces together part of the meal that you ordered? A person is doing their job and they should get a tip for doing it correctly (and not all the time)?I just got carryout at El Charro's Friday and asked for green sauce only. I checked the bag before I left the restaurant and sure enough there was one tomato salsa and one green sauce. I had them change it. It also happened a few weeks ago, too. I went to the new Panera Bread when it had just opened, ordered a chicken salad to go, got home and there was no chicken - just an 8.00 container of spinach. 4951
