I for one will tip above and beyond the "typical" 15%.....IF the server deserves it.  I had waited tables almost all the way through college and totally understand the frustrations from servers....BUT, you know you are bound to get stiffed or poorly tipped sometimes - regardless of the service that you give.  If I am with someone else who is a bad tipper, and the server was good, I will add to my tip to make the other person's tip better.....SO, basically if you have a bad day as a server, expect bad tips - bottom line.  If you do a great job and still get some bad tips, chalk that up to the fact that you are a waiter/waitress and move on.  But, I like what @Heathur: said.....let us know where you work, and we can come in and expect excellence service!  Emoticon  You won't know who we are, and we won't know if you are our actual server.  Emoticon  4951

>> Waiters seem to have a false sense of entitlement acting like the deserve a high tip even if they give terrible service.

@hgmag:   Excellent point.  I don't require every moment of a servers attention, but it is nice that they check on you periodically and promptly bring you what you ask for.

@Retired_Engineer: I do not want their constant attention either but I want them to check if my drinks need to be refilled or if the the order is right. If they hover around too much it is just awkward.

I basically think customer service left the building long ago.  Ten percent of my bill is plenty for dealing with most servers in local eateries.  5 star establishments with pro servers is a different cup of tea but that isnt your local night out.  Servers with a concept know that some folks under tip and some folks over tip and it all washes out. 4951

i agree, tipping is out of control.  restaurants should pay their servers to do their job...serve!  if the service is exceptional, i can see tipping, but why should i pay for someone to do what they were hired for?  doesn't make sense. 4951

I rarely tip at all unless for exceptional service. I feel it's out of control and a "gimme" in many
situations vs being actually earned.

I waited tables for five years during college and
judging others tips made me feel like a panhandler. 4951

Just because people don't understand the concepts of running a restaurant doesn't make them idiots. I'm positive you have no idea how idea how the newspaper industry works but I'm not calling you an idiot. But people don't always tip, and they're not obligated to. You should know that and if you don't like it, perhaps it's time to find a new job. This sense of entitlement and "it's not fair" among the younger people is really annoying! 4951
