At a buffet, I will usually leave a couple bucks if they did their job with my drinks and removing used plates and such.But yea, why does a $35 steak warrant more tip than an $8 burger.Government is the reason. 4951

I delivered pizza years ago. I made minimum wage plus a gas stipen. Plus tips. Most tipped $1-$2 sometimes I would get a $5. On big party orders up to $10
I always had lots of cheese and pepper packets and would check my orders before I left the store. Of course a friendly smile and friendly attitude always helps. I found if I complimented their yard my tips were better. Especially those folks who were big on green well Manicured grass. Emoticon

I think you should tip based on a calculation of time server spent on your group, your income and how big her boobs are.Emoticon 4951

@N+T: I generally tip pizza guys (or girls) $4-$5.  If the weather is really bad, or super hot, or it's a busy time like Superbowl Sunday, I will throw in a couple bucks more.
I guess people who have worked in the service industry before tend to be the better tippers because we have been in those  shoes before.

To each their own, some people don't really understand it, and don't like it, and they aren't going to change their minds about it.  I knew I didn't want to be in that kind of industry forever, and I'm not, and I do pretty well for myself, so now it is my turn to take care of those that are doing the job that I used to do, and I greatly appreciated those tips when I did that kind of work.

One day, my kids may be doing that kind of work while in high school or college and I would hate to see them work so hard and not be rewarded. 4951

Nice to see so many opinions about tipping, even the misguided and ignorant ones!I actually am choosing to work in the restaurant industry while my daughter is too young for school so I can spend as much time as possible with her.  I have a degree in marketing and was in a different choosen career before I became a single mother.This was to put out there to people to really think about what you are leaving your servers at restaurants-the sit down kind where the server is catering to your every need.It would be just if I could come into your place of employment for a service you provide and leave you what I think you should make rather than what someone automatically pays you.  Maybe then some of you would reconsider your take on tipping.After being in the industry for 15+yrs and at all levels from host to management, there is always room for improvement but @fairlane67  there's not much more I can be "taught" about the industry.Servers are generally paid $2-3/hr and yes our tips ususally even out, but we do get taxes taken out on the claimed tips which results in NO PAYCHECK or a very minimal one at that- think of that next time you  get paid on Friday night and am enjoying dinner out- my paycheck is what you leave on the table.Just be considerate please!  4951

I have not had the intention of being rude and sarcastic, as I believe you have.  However, my comment, was not about the industry.  You made the comment about "teaching" your parents and then implying that the rest of us should learn the lesson as well....my comment was meant to say "most of us do not care" about the details of why you or the restaurant aren't having a good day.  We pay good money to enjoy a service, and when that does not happen....we do not have any further obligation, than to indicate that with our $$.  We short tip and then do not return....But since you know everything about the industry...I am sure that you can quickly identify the problems and correct them, before any customer would have to have a bad experience in your place of business....thanks. 4951

What excuse do you have then for great service and still giving a bad tip?If you take insult to anything I have stated, maybe it is because it hits a little close to home for you..just saying.Like I said I choose my job to be with my daughter...I do take the good with the bad and overall I make better money then most, but it is the ones that are ignorant that need to be taught a lesson about tipping. 4951

@xexidious:

so...you make better money than most, but you still want to ***** about the few people that don't tip the way you think they should? i don't follow.

anyway...have you ever stopped and thought that maybe the people that don't tip you what you want don't have the extra money to leave as a tip. keeping in mind that a tip is EXTRA for the customer. maybe eating out is a real treat to some people and they don't have the luxury of giving you all the extra you want.
