@mm4731: Like it!

Honestly, if the service is BAD, then sure, a tip is not deserved, and if people are stuck sitting there for half an hour and nobody comes by, I don't blame them for having fun with the condiments!

However, a server that really busts their butt, is friendly, and goes out of their way to make your dining experience pleasurable, corrects any errors, let's you know if your food is going to take longer than expected and explains why, re-fills your drinks, makes sure you have enough napkins, etc.  deserves at least 15%. 4951

I agreed with @Fairlane67 on this one. And this is the second post like this from a waiter in a month or two so it's hard for me to have sympathy. If you don't like what's going on, talk to your manager, find a new place to work, or get a different profession. I generally tip 18% for average service & 20% for good service. We've also got some regular servers who usually get 25%. Especially the one server who's memorized all 3 of our orders- & mine is picky, & never lets our glasses get empty. People like that deserve 25% for sure. If someone is straight up RUDE though & acts like I'm inconveniencing them by asking for a refil, to fix a mess up in my order, for katchup, etc. a waiter like that gets nada & I'll usually write something snarky on my receipt. I understand everyone has bad days but a bad attitude will get you very little to no tip here. 4951

@mm4731 How much do you tip?  I know how servers are paid, I work in payroll-my point is I do not tip folks working a counter that make minimum.  There is no reason to do that-I guess I could put a tip jar on my desk and request tips for helping folks in the office?

I generally tip 20%, however it is irritating that restaurants get by with paying their servers a couple of bucks an hour and it's the patrons responsibility to leave a good tip to make up for their crappy wages.

Restaurants should pay their employees minimum wage like every other company, then if a person wishes to tip on good service than that should be optional. 4951

@wallacepups: Good point.  This is why we have people like the original poster, feeling like we , the customer, are obligated to make up for their "crappy" wage.  A tip is a reward to service providers for , hopefully, excellent service.  Not a base pay.

Honest question though....If I am at Saltgrass and order a $35 steak, why should I tip more than had I ordered an $8 hamburger? 4951

Servers do a lot more than the people who do the counter service type of work (I know, I have done both).  When you go to a full-service restaurant, you show up, and sit down at your booth or table.  The server comes by, takes your order, should know the menu well enough to make suggestions, tell you about the different options, etc.  They bring you your drinks, re-fill them for you, make sure you have all of the silverware and napkins that you need, bring you any condiments that you need, bring you your food, ensure that everything was prepared correctly, takes care of any problems, etc.  Last time I went to a counter service type of place, they don't do all of that for you, and you are on your own.  That is why they earn tips.

Although when I was a teenager, and I worked at a donut place, we would occassionally get tips, and I never understood why, but I gladly accepted them.  This was in the days before everyone started putting tip cans out. 4951

"1) it's not always the servers fault....kitchen can be slow and restaurant can be at their max,"Busy is one thing, but a slow kitchen is another thing.  People don't pay hard earned money - yes, your customers work too - to sit waiting for a meal. 4951
