>> You shouldn't have to tip for paying at the counter or picking up, those people are paid at least minimum wage.  I always tip servers, if the service isn't great they get 15%, if it is good they 20-25%
@vlabroski: servers are also paid at least minimum wage
@mm4731:
Actually servers are paid under minimum wage, and are required to claim a certain percentage of their "tips" (at least that's how it was in California 15 years ago)  So, yes, they really do count on the tips. 4951

Though tonight was a decent night at work...this message is for all you idiots out there with NO concept of the runnings of a restaurant.  1) it's not always the servers fault....kitchen can be slow and restaurant can be at their max, 2) most servers tip out around 3% of their sales to the house(for whatever reason..it is not up to us). So when you leave $5 on $100 the server is only making $2 off of your table for the hour you took up that spot, 3) as a server myself I understand not wanting to tip or bad service, but do something worthwhile and talk to a manager about the problem...like I said we still tip out whether you tip us or not, AND being that person who doesn't tip, and thus makes us then pay, ***out of our own pocket to wait on you is horrible!
I am not a server that makes many errors or give bad service too often.  I am one of the highest ranked servers in my establishment and this happens to me just as much as the worst servers we have.
Please don't be ignorant and teach future generations your shortcomings.  I even had to "teach" my parents how to tip accordingly, and I get that maybe that's all you know, but get it straight....and stop being the enabler of bad nights for so many!

@xexidious: Wow, Ok....1) The Customer is not privy to who is the failure in the restaurant for one, for all we know it is you. 2) Your pay structure is what you agreed to work for and is none of my concern who you pay out to.  Furthermore, your lack of tips should be YOUR clue to talk with management about the poor service that YOU are receiving from your support staff.  Maybe you should be the one who needs to be "taught" about how the real world works.  4951

Hey, it is what it is, and yes, servers generally make well above the minimum wage, depending on the establishment they work at, which is why it is a great job for college students, or anyone else needing to make a decent chunk of change in exchange for hard work.

I worked since I was 12 (babysitting, and various retail jobs before and while in college) and I can tell you that being a server was by far the most stressful and physically demanding job that I have had.

Sure, some people work harder than others, you will find that in any job, and some places are busier than others, so it's all relative, but from my experience, most servers work very hard, and deserve those tips. 4951

in Ky. & Ohio  restaurant workers ( not management) are paid way below minium wage . My cousin worked at Frisches BigBoy restaurant for over 10 years & she made $1.20 an hour to start by the end of her 10 years she was making $2.05 an hour plus tips. She made great tiips as she was by the airport , but when they moved her to another location her tips dropped to almost nothing , so she quit .
So when you dine at any restaurant take what they are really making into consideration when tipping . 4951

@Littlegoo: thats all fine and good but they arent actually paid under minimum wage as you stated
@mm4731: Okay, ya got me....what I meant was that aside from the tips, they are, but it all balances out. 4951

@MM4731... each server makes a balance of  a different amount Iam sure , however , working for $1.90 an hour or even $2.50 an hour plus tips isn't that much unless you hussle & give good service then you can get regulars that will come back & request to sit in your serving area. That's when the tips get good & you can make over & above the average salary. Sometimes my daughters would bring home over $100. a night in tips just for 4 or 5 hours of work . Week-ends were always really good tips one Saturday night my oldest daughter brought home $350. in tips. so that was a very good night  for her. 4951

@FoFa:
Yeah, that stinks.  At the restaurant I worked at, we were required to tip at least 2% of our sales (not earnings) to the bus boys, and heck, they deserved it, as they were probably the hardest workers, and the faster they worked, the faster we could turn our tables over and get new butts into the seats.  I generally did pretty well with tips, so I tipped them more.  It would have been stingy and mean not to. 4951

If service is bad, i wont tip at all. if you are working for tips then you should actually earn it. i look at it as a commission. if you are in sales you dont get paid unless you seal the deal, what is the difference. i will still tip if service is good but food is bad. that is not the fault of service unless my food is cold. 4951
