Though tonight was a decent night at work...this message is for all you idiots out there with NO concept of the runnings of a restaurant.  1) it's not always the servers fault....kitchen can be slow and restaurant can be at their max, 2) most servers tip out around 3% of their sales to the house(for whatever reason..it is not up to us). So when you leave $5 on $100 the server is only making $2 off of your table for the hour you took up that spot, 3) as a server myself I understand not wanting to tip or bad service, but do something worthwhile and talk to a manager about the problem...like I said we still tip out whether you tip us or not, AND being that person who doesn't tip, and thus makes us then pay, ***out of our own pocket to wait on you is horrible!I am not a server that makes many errors or give bad service too often.  I am one of the highest ranked servers in my establishment and this happens to me just as much as the worst servers we have. Please don't be ignorant and teach future generations your shortcomings.  I even had to "teach" my parents how to tip accordingly, and I get that maybe that's all you know, but get it straight....and stop being the enabler of bad nights for so many!  4951

Sorry you had a bad night, this probably could have been written with more tact, ie not a calling everyone idiots.  But regardless, once upon a time in a life long long ago, I used to be a waitress, as we were called before PC took over the US. I generally tip pretty decent.  In order to get a bad tip from me you have to prove yourself to be a really really bad server, like never return to my table, especially if my glass is empty and I have to ask someone else to fill it and they say something like 'll get your server and then they never show. Or if when the food is delivered and I'm missing something and they never return with it after repeated requests.   Menu errors happen, kitchen errors happen, its part of the service.  Bad attitude by a server isn't worth tipping.  4951

Is it possible this is a poorly run restaurant and you get shafted because of everyone else (slow kitchen)?  If it's a bad company, but you're a good server, maybe consider looking for a job at a better run restaurant.   4951

since both our oldest daughters & our youngest daughter help put their selves thru college by working on tables we make sure we tip very well . For good service we tip 20 % for excellent service we tip 25 % , for average service we tip 15 % & anything less we always ask to speak to the manager .

People go out to eat to relax & enjoy their meal & to be catered to if the server has an attitude & does not make their dining experience a pleasant one then I do not feel they should be tipped for  bad service. BUt we always try to get a conversation going so we are on good terms with our server , you never know what will happen to your food order in the kitchen ( I've heard some really bad stories ). 4951

I totally understand you, and we all need to vent.  While I was in college, I waited tables and felt the exact same way.  I generally did quite well, but it's a big slap in the face when people leave you $5 on a $100 or higher check.  I don't enjoy stressing out, running around like a chicken without a head to refill your glasses 5 times if you're going to just stiff me in the end.  I always worked really hard to ensure great service.
It's been 15 years since I waited tables, but I always remember how stressful and demanding of a job it is, and I tip well, unless service is awful.

I think some people just don't know any better because of how they were brought up, but it doesn't make it right.  People need to be gently reminded that dining out at a full service restaurant should equate to a 15-25% tip depending on how great the service is.  Also, now that we have 2 little ones, I generaly tip a bit more, especially if they leave a mess.....that was definitely one of my pet peeves as a server.

If you are too cheap to pay the extra for a tip, there are many other dining options out there.  Just sayin. 4951

We usually go 20% max on tips (unless it is a small check) and work backwards.  So if you don't pay attention to our table or forget the refill wtc., take 5% off. Unless the waitress is good looking, then no deductions regardless of service.

I went to a restraunt were all the waiters and waitresses pooled all of thier tips and split the tips equally at the end of the night. As you can imagine the service was poor (no incentive). 4951

You shouldn't have to tip for paying at the counter or picking up, those people are paid at least minimum wage.  I always tip servers, if the service isn't great they get 15%, if it is good they 20-25% 4951

I totally do not understand where it is written we, the customer, should pay the restaurants labor bill.Seems the food industry has us all convinced we should subsidize their labor force. And to get good service?Really?Try that in other service industries.I'm just saying. 4951
