Just curious, if you live in KW what is the best orientation for a home. Lets say the main rooms are oriented to the back of the house and you have a pool.  4951

Ours faces south so the sun comes across the front.  Minimal windows and shade trees on the east and west side keep sun load down. The pool is a little close to the house so as you get into the fall it is more shaded than I would like - cools down too quickly. 4951

It doesn't matter to me. When I bought my house, that wasn't even a factor in the selection. 4951

I want my front door to face the street and my back door should go into the backyard. 4951

Nor mine, just what we ended up with. Now that I've been here a while it is smart to think about it especially with an older home - sun load is a big part of AC bills. 4951

@BooBear: You wouldn't like my house, my front door does not face the street. I don't even have any good windows on the front of the house.

I'd say you want a north/south exposure. My house faces west and it's brutal in the summer! 4951

This was a consideration for us. We always have bought a house that faces mostly north so we get shade around 4 under the pergola. Makes for a lot cooler for grilling out in the summer....and the pool gets sun all day 4951

Consider where you put your tv outlets! If the tv faces the windows/ sun can make a difference? We couldn't decide what wall of two to place entertainment center so just had wires run to both sides..
Sorry if off topic? 4951

@Love2Run: I agree with north/south, which is what we have.  That setting summer sun is brutal around 4pm on the west side of the house, but the garage and one other room gets the brunt of it.

@SandyKnee: The sun sets on our driveway & kitchen/dinning rooms windows. It's horrible in the heat of the summer. The first couple of years in this house I pinned a towel to a curtain rod, the kind with rubber ends & in the afternoon we would put it up. I did break down & bought a shade for the window.  It's a odd size window & I had a hard time finding one to fit & match the kitchen. The bad part is getting in the car at that time... so hot you can't even touch the steering wheel.

If you ever decide to have solar panels then you'll want party of your roof to have a good Southern Sun access 4951
