I was checking out at Kroger yesterday and as the cashier rang up my cabbage, she asked if I was making blacked eyed peas with it. I've heard of them - have no idea how to make them. So, I picked up a bag on my trip for milk tonight and am going to try them. I've been told (by the Boston native behind me in line yesterday) that they're heaven in a pot, and they can be made with onions or without.  Help a girl out? 4951

I don't make them from scratch.  Instead i open the can and heat them up.  If you Google "how to make black eyed peas" you will get a wealth of information. 4951

@donnatella: I didn't realize you could buy them in a can, too! I figured I would Google after seeing if anyone had some tried and true recipes they would share first. Emoticon

I'm not a fan of them, but I do use them for a few recipes. They aren't bad when combined with other ingredients. I usually buy Trappey's or Bush's.

Mom, still to this day, insists that I have them for New Years, so I put ONE on a spoon, just to make her happy. 4951

People don't make blackeyed peas, they grow. (doing my best Frank impersonation) I don't buy them in a bag, I buy them in a can. I recently created a new, easy dish including BE peas.Combine a can of BE peas with a steaming bag of wild rice. Then add chopped up pieces of ham.....a really good hearty meal that's easy and quick to make! If you add most of the juice from the canned BE peas, you'll have kind of a thick soup. 4951

@lola:
lola is right use ham or salt pork and throw them in a pot or crock pot just like you would cook pinto beans...  They are not my favorite but if you use salt pork or ham they turn out pretty good...  A must for New Years day.....  4951

Hoppin' JohnIngredients  1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large ham hock 1 cup onion, chopped 1/2 cup celery, chopped 1/2 cup green pepper, chopped 1 tablespoon chopped garlic 1 pound black-eyed peas, soaked overnight and rinsed 1 quart chicken stock Bay leaf 1 teaspoon dry thyme leaves Salt, black pepper, and cayenne 3 tablespoons finely chopped green onion 3 cups steamed white rice  Directions Heat oil in a large soup pot, add the ham hock and sear on all sides for 4 minutes. Add the onion, celery, green pepper, and garlic, cook for 4 minutes. Add the black-eyed peas, stock, bay leaves, thyme, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 40 minutes, or until the peas are creamy and tender, stir occasionally. If the liquid evaporates, add more water or stock. Adjust seasonings, and garnish with green onions. Serve over rice. 4951

I dispise black eyed peas...but unfortunately my dad makes me eat them every year. (Yes even now lol). They taste like dirt to me and literally make me gag. I tried everything as a kid to cover up the taste- BBQ sauce, ketchup, Mac n cheese.

Now as an adult, I buy the fresh or frozen ones. Cook them up with bacon fat, pinto bean seasoning and a can of spicy rotel. They are still nasty to me, but I found this is the most tolerable way. The canned ones are vomit! 4951

I'm not much of a black-eyed pea person either - there's something weird about the texture.  Cooked or canned.  But I DO like Texas Caviar and can eat a bunch of good luck if I make a big bowl of that.  Great with chips! 4951

I had no idea so many others hate blackeyed peas! I've always hated them, but it's insisted that I eat them on New Year's Day. So I buy a can and choke down a couple. :yuck: 4951
