I do. I just started last year. Must have canned 20 jars of tomatoes. Didn't have to buy sauce for a whole year. Awesome. You can find the kits at Lowes and Home Depot that come with instructions. Great hobby. I want to grow another garden but don't have time this year but my goal is to grow a huge garden and can , can, can.     4951

Canning is something I plan to get into this coming year. I don't know anyone who does it. @Beastmode, Did you find it easy to learn? My biggest fear is getting sick from not doing it correctly. 4951

@Grimmie: The directions that come with the kits are good. If you follow them or find use the ones online from say Lowes or Home Depot you will have no problems. I'm a Military guy so I have no issues following directions. The one issue I had was not having all the right tools (tongs, big pot) I tried to do it with what I had. It worked, but made a big mess. Get the right tools. Once I did that my wife and I had no problems. Think I spend $40-50 on all the equipment but I got the best of the best, think all our stuff is the brand Ball.

@beastmode: that's great but, rather have a granny do it and I pay for the product... I have a 35 cases of MRE'S for a rainy day...

I'm a Former Marine myself. Always tell my wife it's kinda weird, a Marine who like to garden, cook, make homemade soap, vanilla extract....I like doing all this stuff hahahaa! Once you get the hang of it you can make better stuff than anything in the store and it saves a lot of cash and it's better for you. My next project is to get the mill grinder for my blender and start making my own flour, cornmeal. Been making my own laundry soap for about 5 years now for like 2 cents a load and it actually cleans our clothes better than anything I have every bought. 4951

When I was young, my father had a garden about 1 acre in size.  We were always either canning or freezing vegetables and some fruits.  I agree that they were much better than anything you can buy.  I spent a lot of time helping in the garden and with the preparation for canning or freezing. We also ground our own file (for gumbo), red pepper, and would course-grind corn for our ducks. After I got out of college,  I tried to raise a small garden a couple
of times.  They were all miserable failures.  I guess my dad had the
green thumb in our family!  After he had back surgery, he couldn't handle the big garden any more.  But he still had a few green onions and tomato plants until he died.  p.s.  If you ever grind red pepper, it creates a lot of pepper dust.  Don't touch your eyes, nose, mouth, or private parts.  I forgot that last part one time and I had a burning sensation the rest of the day! 4951
