There is this guy, maybe 25 year old, 100% blind who  lives in my temporary apt complex in Utah.  I talk to him sometimes, nice guy and always happy. So today I was looking out of my window and watched him with his metal cane, getting around as usual and he's pretty good. Only problem, there were mounds of snow all around his usual path. Think he was trying to get to the commuter train that passes in front of the apt.Well, he was really struggling, it totally messed up his bearings and he got turned around probably half a dozen times. I finally had enough and was going to help him but he figured it out. I don't know if helping him was the right answer, but damn, it sure made me appreciate not only the gift of sight but that someone will likely help you even if you don't want it. Anyway, just thought I would share this story during the holidays. It sure made me think about what are the best things in life.   4951

My son has a visual impairment, and we are monitoring the optic nerve in his good eye. I literally get sick in the stomach when I think of the possibility of lost sight. We see all these ribbons for "awareness", but not much about awareness for people with visual impairments. We are hoping there will be an implantable lens for his bad eye that he can try when he is grown. @beastmode Your story broke my heart a little... 4951

a friend of mine has a son that went blind when he was around 10 , he's 26 now & he just graduated from college & is getting married this coming July . So even though his sight was taken from him he still was able to live a full & happy life because he believed he could , he never gave up .....that's what life is all about ...never giving up . A good lesson to be learned. 4951

Ask him what he was doing.  Next time, when it snows, run a line along his path.  Then he can use the line to guide him.  4951

All of us can use a little help at times.  If he could use a little help in the future, do it as one human to another, not as a superior to a disabled person.  He doesn't want pity.  Maybe just give him directions to a clear path in the snow.   4951
