What's the best kind of leash for a big dog? It's time to size up and I don't know what to get. He's probably about 40 lbs, a German shepherd mix. 4951

@Katiemcg: We got the Kong brand one from Petsmart-our GS mix broke through the rest.  This one has least the longest w/o even so much as a fray.  DH takes her for a 3-4miles walk everyday.

@katiemcgMy friend told me about Lupine leashes.  They company will replace them even if the dog chews it up.  Atascazoo sells them.  You can probably find them at a good price online. Can't beat a lifetime guarantee.http://www.lupinepet.com/ 4951

I had a large dog back in high school, 180lb and I walked that dog with a .50cent piece of twine. 4951

@Katiemcg: Get a harness, it's much easier on you AND the dog.

Don't get a harness for a large dog because you will not have good control. No "power steering". 4951

The trainer who trained my German Shepard and I said nothing but a leather leash. It has very little give so you have more control. Plus it lasts forever. It made a huge difference for us. Miss my Zoopie. Lost him last year. I have since past the leash on to my mother who has a Great Pyranise (sp?). Nothing works better for her.

Control with a harness? Never had an issue, I'd say the physics give you more control. Also, eliminates choking them. The only thing with a harness it takes about 10 sec to put on.      4951

don't spend all your money on those fancy leashes,,, just go buy a good rope, from the hardware store, and make your on Dlinks on it,, and it will work better 4951

I like the leashes at Pampered Paws. They are Lone Wolf brand. They hold up well and are easy on the hands. Plus they are made in Spring Tx.

We use a gently leader for Bella.  she is about 45 # and pulls a lot on a regular leash.  We have trained and trained.  She is very bright, and responds well, but once on a leash she is a different dog.  the Gently Leader works very well.  And then the actual leash doesn't really matter. 4951

I use the Gentle Leader on my dog too! She walks much better with it and, like @ mamajulie said, my dog is a different dog when I forget to put the Gentle Leader on! I also found a regular collar chokes my dog where she would be gagging! 4951

40 pounds!?!? Large?!?   Our small dog is 42 pounds. For walks we typically use a retractable, but then Bree is a Great Pyr., sure she is 114 pounds, but great pyr's are GREAT walkers. For most other things, car rides, vet, etc. we have a couple plain jane nylon ones. 4951
