If they had moved out then I dont see a problem with them helping out..not sure how much. My daughter and her daughter live with us but we dont ask for anything because we are trying to get her through school so we dont have to support her for the rest of her life. 4951

I'm not a grandmother but I definitely think they should be expected help out. They're adults too & need to maintain some kind of responsibility. Everything depends on circumstance of course. If they are jobless, maybe give them a pass until they get on their feet but once employed, I say charged a small portion of your rent (just a few hundred. Maybe $200 or $300, depending on their income. Enough to help with extra utilities they'll be using.) & definitely make them pay for their own food! Do their own grocery shopping! If you cook, maybe take turns where you cook for everyone one night & they cook for everyone the next. I wouldn't charge them per individual meal though, that's kind of tacky, but definitely make them do their own grocery shopping. Child care is tricky. Most grandparents I know who watch their grandkid enjoy having the luxury of being able to care for them. Both my parents & DH's parents work full time so I do not speak from experience, lol. That one is up to you but if you choose to charge for childcare, I would charge maybe half what a daycare or babysitter charges. Best of luck to you & your family. 4951

Many years ago my oldest daughter moved back with us when she filed for divorce , she had 2 kids ages 3 & 7 months. She found a job & started college . We did not charge her anything & I watched her 2 kids while she worked & went to school . Rules were laid down the day she moved back , if she wanted to go out for an evening I would expect to be paid $5.00 per hour for child care . However as long as she was working & going to school those hours were "free".She lived with us 7 months until she was able to get her own apartment . I continued to watch her children for "free" until she graduated from college . She was then able to get her neighbor to watch them .That's what parents are for ...you give them a "hand up" not a "hand out" when they need it & it teaches them responsibility & worth . 4951

It would depend on the situation, but it should have been discussed PRIOR to them moving in.....I understand helping your kids out but I have seen grandparents USED AND ABUSED by kids who use the grandparents love the for grandkids to milk them of money and resources....  4951

Every family is different. In my family, all of our doors are open to each other no questions asked, no matter what. We also don't have anyone that would take advantage of one another either. Kids are your kids forever. I would (if this were ME , not saying you should or should not do this) is immediately sit down, plan an "exit strategy", open a special account, and have them put X amount of $ in every two weeks instead of paying bills. If a job or education is an issue, help set that up as well. Unless this is for sure a long term thing and you all WANT to live together. Some families do that nowadays. In that case, then split the bills and rent, etc. Every family, every situation is uniqueEmoticon Good luck to you! 4951
