Anyone know anything about this?  My eldest applied to University of Houston and got an email from the Honors college.  Is it worth the extra work load?  Will she get more opportunities for scholarships?  Her counselor at school thinks it is worth it but I didn't know if anyone on here had any experience personally or with a child. 4951

@BooBear: Oh okay, I didn't think you were old enough to be a grandmother.... But I like how you think, guess I'd be one too if my son had a baby right now. (I double dare him) Emoticon 4951

I don't know about the Honors College here but the one for Northwestern in Louisiana is a total waste.  My sister went to that one and all they did in class was have discussion.  The Professors were all wack.  I found out they created it for the kids who went to their Honors High School program and couldn't cut it in regular college.  It was like they were all book smart but not one lick of common sense if they didn't read it they couldn't fathom it. 4951

@Zephard: They were saying that it was for the kids that took AP classes in HS and that they have smaller classes, first priority for picking classes, special computer classrooms to work in and then later they get a mentor.  The counselor told me that there are more opportunities for scholarships as well. All of this sounds good, but I just wanted to talk with someone that actually went through it to make sure that it was all that it was cracked to be.  It requires that she submit a literary analysis or research paper, but she is just so swamped right now getting ready for finals.  Just didn't want to pile on her more stuff if it really wasn't worth it.

@Nurse3: My sisters experience was smaller class size and a lot of personal attention.  But please keep an eye on her my sisters mentor at NW was a wicken priestess and my sister converted to wika until she married in her late 20's and reverted back to the religion she was raised in.

I would be shocked if anyone enchanted my oldest away from Christ.  She is pretty level headed and not swayed too easily.  For 17, she's pretty set in her ways.  LOl 4951

@Nurse3: It doesn't have to be religion in particular.  The mentors just have a lot of influence on them is all.  I wouldn't send my child through it due to the fact that I would want them to experience a traditional college experience.  But if I didn't have the funds or needed the scholarships and my child could get in I would consider Honors College over no college or financial strain.

I forgot to mention that it wasn't just the close mentor relationship that I didn't go well for my sister it was also being around other kids who were really to smart to function in normal college.  My sister loved it but would come home for the Holidays talking out of her mind and wanting to talk about all sorts of really unrealistic things.  Anyway, that was a long time ago and in a different state so you need to do what you feel is right for your situation and your child. 4951

Thanks for the insight, Zephard.  We are keeping her options open right now.  She's got to get through all these projects and finals before we do anything. 4951
