Anybody work in one?

My office is going from office/cubicle setup to an open workspace environment when my company moves next year....and I'm NOT looking forward to losing my office. 4951

that sounds AWFUL!!
@mm4731: Tell me about it....no more personal calls without everyone listening in, forget about being useful on a conference call, people buggin you every other minute with their stupidity, getting sick much easily, no internet surfing, people looking over your shoulder all the time, and our personal spaces being cut more than half of what they are now.

Yeah...its awful all right. I dont see one positive to moving to this type of environment. 4951

Our engineering/drafting bay is a large room but is divided by partitions. We have the visual privacy but everyone can hear your phone calls. It's not an issue because it's just 4 of us and we all get along very well. 4951

I was an architect for a number of years & did the space planning for large commercial offices. Most place are phasing into a more open concept because it's beneficial for the younger generation that's coming into the workplace. It's hard for younger people to stay on task, so taking away the partitions gives less opportunity for screwing around. Also younger people work better in groups, with input from several sources. I've personally worked in totally open rooms, and had private offices & when it comes down to it, I actually liked the open rooms. You get closer to your team & work as a group. 4951

Early in my career, I shared an office with another Engineer.  After those first few years, I had a private office.  When I retired, the company was building a new office building and it was designed for cubicle farms.  I'm glad I left when I did. There was some talk about going to an open workspace where there were desks with PCs and you had a designated small file case on wheels.  Every desk was first-come-first-take basis.  That meant no personal items and you might sit at a different desk every day. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Sounds like the new Shell Admin building in Deer Park.

I went from having my own office for the first 10 yrs of my career, to going to cubeland. (Talk about doing things backwards - as I climbed up the ladder professionally, my physical environment got worse!) I didn't mind cubeland too much, as partitions were about 5.5 feet tall, then you had a cabinet or two. If I really wanted a private call, I just went into an office or a conference room. It did build relationships better - we had a lot of fun conversations.  I think you can still build relationships and bounce ideas of each other in cubes without going the open concept route. That, I see, is more for nebby eyes to look at your screens and make sure you're not jagging off. Whereas mini breaks to BS on the computer are beneficial, I think. 4951

DH worked in one and HATED it. It was especially bad for him- he's ADD and every little thing diverted his attention. He rarely got any work done. The only thing that saved him was that he travelled 85% of the time. 4951

my husbands office went to "open office" 3 years ago . Before he had his own office with 4 walls & a door  today he has a desk that is 3 to 4 feet from another desk. He says he has a hard time hearing anything on the phone & getting anything done . So he is always bring work home to "finish" that he could not get done at work due to the noise level . Thank goodness he will be retiring in a  a few more years & he will not have to put up with it ..... 4951

@WJo: That is exaclty what I'm worried about. My job is different from those in my department because I spend lots of time on conference calls and on the phone discussing items with surveyors, field technicians, managers and right-of-way agents. As it is now, when I can't stand the cackling and partying going on by my co-workers, i just shut the door. I'm not going to have that luxury at the new office.  They say they are going to move to this new environment to promote "collaboration", which makes absolutely no sense for what i do. 4951

I've had my own office for 33 years.  My company is now considering going to cubicles.  I sure that will take years of demo/construction and, fortunately, I will probably retire before that. 4951
