Like many others, we no longer have insurance through an employer. Obamacare will run about $800/mo for what I consider a crappy plan. I'm so mad I could spit. I'd like to investigate purchasing an individual family plan but I really don't know where to start. Wanted to see if anyone had any tips? I'd really appreciate any advice from folks who may have been through this. 4951

Me either!!! I have no idea where to start but I absolutely have to figure it out because I can't have the kids uninsured. Or any of us for that matter. Even if I found something that looked good on the Obamacare website, I'm afraid to use it due to security issues. And you hear that people are signing up only to find out there is no record that they signed up.   4951

Isn't that a shame? (Obamacare) So much for it being "affordable", when it even works.  Ugh - I'm just going to bite my tongue here - but not too hard bc even with my good employer-supported health plan, it's going to cost me $$$. Anyhow, do either you or your spouse own a business - even a small one? I know being a member of a local Chamber of Commerce allows you into a health plan.  I just did a quick google search and came upon this page: www.ehealthinsurance .com/  I tested it out with my family info (3 young kids under the age of 6, spouse who smokes...) It quoted me at plans starting at $614 and quoted for Aetna and BC/BS Texas. Note: I didn't take the time to look further into these plans, but that is what I would expect to pay. My employer-based insurance is at least that per year (if not more), actually, with deducitbles. (I think everyone has a deductible nowadays.)  Good luck - and I'm sorry you're facing this. 4951

Thanks ctl74. I'll look at that website. We are used to paying quite a bit for insurance since my husband works for a small company. But we had pretty good coverage. Some of the plans in the $800/mo range on the Obamacare website don't even have an office visit copay. You have to meet your 12k deductible first. Are you kidding me? And brand name medication copays run $100-$150. Oh, and dental looks like it would be another $100 or so per month. Haven't even checked into vision. We have a decent income (not wealthy by any means) and are frugal so I have no idea how a lot of families with income closer to the median are going to be able to afford insurance at all. I am more sorry for them than us. But I am in panic mode.  4951

Thank you Fallon! A name of a non-government professional is more than I had hoped to get. I'll call him today. You are right, educating yourself on all of this is daunting. And to have such a short amount of time to take care of this just sucks. Even if I find and buy a policy, are they going to get it processed and get our cards mailed to us by 1/1? With all the chaos surrounding this whole mess it seems unlikely. 4951

Do you need lots of care/drugs for existing conditions? You have to take into consideration where you stand. While things can change on a dime, if you don't have money saved for emergencies and you have conditions that need routine treatment you are better off paying a higher premium and getting the coverage you need vs. having a lower premium and higher deductable.

There use to be plans for non-insurance coverage through medical/dental discount plans that would be better than nothing. But with ObamaCare, I don't know if those can even exist anymore?? 4951

@TheTruthHurts I have maj med through Assurant.  They go through USAA.  It was only 300.00 for about 3 1/2 months. Office visits, drugs or preventative care aren't covered and neither are pre existing conditions. 2500 ded, 50% after that til 5000, then 100% up to 2 mil.  Awesome, right?  BUT it doesn't "qualify" as minimum required coverage as far as Obamacare is concerned.  WTH not? Cause it doesn't cost me 800 bucks a month? Cause I'm not dependant on the government at the moment?  I'm so mad!!! 4951

We do need decent coverage. We are careful with money but no way could we afford to drop 12k for a deductible before coverage started, should something happen. We are healthy, but you never know. And with kids, you know we have several office visits per year. I just can't believe this is happening. And like I said, there are many in a worse spot than we are. No way are most younger single people with a lower income going to sign up for this. I guess the stats are already proving that. So is it safe to say these premiums will just go up? I have so many questions. 4951

I would say study all options available carefully including plans with the ACA.  In regards to the ACA the rollout didn't work as smoothly as the President hoped, but the law itself is not the total disaster opponents are making it out to be.  As with a lot of things in life the truth falls somewhere in the middle. In regards to the security of the ACA website it probably does need some further tweaking.  However, there is no consumer website that is totally secure from hackers.  As a matter of fact major institutions from banks to the IRS have had web attacks where data was lost.  When we as a society decided that we wanted the convenience of online business transactions as opposed to old fashioned pencil and paper we opened the door for data thieves.  And they will always find ways to defeat whatever security measure is in place. As for insurance rates, many have brought up the fact that insurance is skyrocketing because of the ACA.  Actually insurance cost were increasing before the law was passed.  Also keep in mind the majority of the ACA has not been fully implemented yet so all of these increases cannot be laid at the step of the ACA.  I believe from the research I've done that some insurance companies are using the ACA as cover for unnecessary rate increases.  It's a win-win.  They increase their profit margins while at the same time blaming a law which a lot of people mistrust at the present time.  So the fact they're just being greedy gets lost in the political rhetoric. As I said study all options.  I wish you luck in finding something both satisfying and affordable. 4951
