Is dressing made with cornbread while stuffing is breadcrumbs? I love the cornbread kind, the other not so much.  4951

No no no, I don't use no stuffing! I use real cornbread with chicken broth and an egg to go along with my celery, sage, butter, fresh onions, chicken pieces, poultry seasoning, and parsley. My dressing alone can be a meal….. 4951

@GoldenGirl: A sample lady at Sams told me the same thing.  You don't add raw eggs?  Do you bake it?

I never really have eaten bad stuffing/dressing even with nuts and raisins in it. Stuffing is pretty difficult to screw up. 4951

@lola: I don't add eggs, I know people who do though... Yes I bake some and then I stuff the bird as well... The stuffing/dressing that comes out of the bird is always the best....

Ugh this thread is torture. I love stuffing/ dressing! Stovetop, homemade, all of it! The only BAD stuffing I've ever had is this disgusting, gritty, puke-worthy frito stuffing that no one but she & my grandpa like. Crushed up fritos & veg-all is worse than it sounds. I could reeeeally go for some good stuffing now though, thanks lol. 4951

@bubbleyes72: do you use a cornbread mix like Jiffy?  Jiffy is kind of sweet. I use it for the corn casserole I love.

I just read the words dressing & stuffing are interchangeable. No difference. I always call it stuffing. 4951

We use a modified recipe from my mother.  Hers tasted good but was too dry.  We use cornbread and breadcrumbs.  We also boil a chicken, add the meat and use the broth.  Plus all the veggies and stuff, and we bake it.  Yum!I make my own cranberry sauce. 4951

Is dressing made with cornbread while stuffing is breadcrumbs?

@lola: Traditional southern "dressing" is made with cornbread and contains all the spices and seasonings mentioned.  Some people, to include my mother, would also add shredded turkey meat and call it "turkey and dressing", but "turkey and dressing" also refers to regular cornbread dressing as a side dish to the main dish of turkey.  "Stuffing" is normally made of bread crumbs with some of the same spices and seasonings, and can include crumbled up or shredded meat as well.  It is normally used to "stuff" the cavity in the whole turkey when cooked, but is also used as a side dish sometimes.

It is also traditional in the south to make giblet gravy which you pour over the dressing, however, I have never been a fan of that.  I think it is made out of the turkey organs (liver and gizzard) with eggs and broth added.
