Maybe a 190 thermostat let the water get hotter before the Rad. lets it go. 4951

I agree that the thermostat is the likely problem.  The thermostat holds the water in the engine block until it reaches a certain temperature, then it releases the water to the radiator and allows cooler radiator water into the engine block (while the hot water cools in the radiator).  The water pump circulates the water in the engine block and the cab heater gets it's water from that stream.  Your engine runs better once it is warmed up.   If the thermostat temperature is  too low (or isn't even there), the water won't heat up until ALL of the water in the system heats up.Also, DO NOT let them put radiator flush crap in your water.  Every time I've tried that (twice), it ate up the seal in my water pump and I had to replace the water pump. 4951

@Sniper12:
2003 dodge ramI am going to have them replace the thermostat to a hotter one,, the temp on my truck stays cool.It may need a flush out. My cousin  and a friend posted on FB that they are having the same problem, seems common for Dodge 4951

Try googling a Dodge Ram forum - others might have run into this problem. I haven't been on there in a while but try Edmunds.com, too. 4951

@KTownTexican:  Maybe radiator flushes have gotten better, but years ago I used it on two cars and both of their water pumps started leaking within a week of using the flush.  The flush damaged the water pump seals and the pumps had to be replaced.  The first time, I thought coincidence.....the second time, I knew it had to be the flush.if you do a flush, keep your eyes out for a small water leak.  There is a weep-hole on the water pump that will leak water if the seal is failing.

after a short trip, put the heat on high and touch the radiator hose, next find the in and out hose on to the heater core. if its the same temperature, replace the thermostat to 190. if one is hot and the other cold, you core is clogged. if it's as new as you say, it should fune. 4951
