She is just following what the new federal law mandates.  This is not exclusive to Houston.  BUT, I'm sure it will be looked at differently since she is openly gay. 4951

That sounds reasonable to me.  Of more importance, they need to work on the pension that city workers get paid.  Now THAT concerns me as a taxpayer! 4951

I don't know how they could expect not to. No grounds for exclusion on that IMO.I guess the term "tax payer funded" is meant to inflame. But all  COH  employees get tax payer funded  benefits. Emoticon 4951

Taxpayer Funded Benefits to Same-Sex Couples

@TXSG: Does this means that they are now to get benefits on a system that they have been paying into and have had nothing to show for up until now? If Gay's aren't paying taxes... Call me GAY and I'll be stopping my checks to uncle Sam today! 4951

This should have happened a long time ago.  Everyone in this country should have equal rights, regardless.  4951

NO, everyone in this country should not have equal rights in regards to marriage.  Marriage is a benefit to society and is between a man and a woman.  Anything else is sexual perversion and unnatural!!! 4951

"The city of Houston will offer health and life insurance benefits to all spouses of legally married employees, including same-sex couples, despite a voter-approved 2001 charter amendment that had banned the practice, Mayor Annise Parker announced Wednesday."

Ok, I did not know that...can't that be legally challenged? And the news is reporting that since same sex marriage is not legal HERE, it's definitely up for grabs.

Why can't people who don't pass the bar have the same rights lawyers have - to practice law?Marriage is not a right.  It's an institution with a definition. 4951

@fcabanski:

How is the lawyer scenario the same thing?

It's not an institution in the way you want to present it. It's not a club or a building. It's a private relationship matter. The government should have never gotten involved in that. Once they did, the whole definition thing complicated matters.

You don't have to agree with it, many don't and I understand. But on a level of rights everyone else has, you ARE excluding a group. That's why it should be totally and complete private, like religion. The govt can recognize one faith bc to do so automatically excludes the others. 4951

Awesome. As a mother to a gay child (well she is 20, but still my child), I am glad to see things moving in the right direction. She is still a freakin' human, sheesh. Being gay is a small part of who she is in my opinion. She is also intelligent, giving, caring, funny.. oh I could go on & on but you get the point. Emoticon 4951

When Annise Parker was elected the first time she switched the HC benefits to Cigna which covers same sex partners. It truly is nothing new............ 4951
