I have an area of roots in my yard that I need to have ground out.  Does anybody have any recommendations for someone that does tree stump grinding?  Today is Saturday so I can't call anyone until Monday and I figured I'd start with the companies that are listed in the business section of KDC. 4951

@DiverDude:  Are the roots connected to living trees?  If so, grinding them will likely damage the trees.  It might be better to add soil/compost to cover the roots and sod it.I highly recommend Tim Jennings at TNT Tree Service (713-450-7371 or 281-236-8733).  He will give you an honest appraisal of the situation and can do the grinding.  I found out about his service when I won a free tree trimming here on KDC.  He evaluated the tree I wanted trimming and told me that it was dying (which I suspected).  He ended up cutting it down and trimmed several other trees at no charge. If you go the route of adding soil/compost/sod, I recommend Matt Griffin at Prime Lawn.  He did the landscaping on our front yard.  He can also give you his opinion on the best route to take.

I just wanted to leave an update of how my tree stump grinding went.    I tried to reach TNT but he never called me back. I got a few quotes and my lowest was $100 from a guy in Spring.  I called around to some closer people to get quotes including Antonio Joya Tree Service. Joya wanted the job so agreed to match the $100 quote even though they originally quoted $200.  I told them that I was going to go with the other guy since he already gave me the lowest quote. (I was expecting that I might find a better deal from someone closer so they didn't have the commute cost)  After speaking with the Spring guy, he wasn't sure when exactly he would be available to come out to do the job so I called Joya back and told them they could have the job if they could be there the next morning.  They agreed and said it would be sometime after 9am.  After several hours past 9am they said they were on there way and it would probably be about another 1hr. After another 3 hours they said they were only an hour away and were stuck in traffic but were still headed that way.  At about 5-6 that afternoon they called and said they would not be able to make it but would be there first thing in the morning at 8-8:30am.  They showed up sometime between 9 and 9:30am to inform me of how much they were willing to do for the $100 that they had quoted me.  Which was half of the job that I needed to get done.  What I should have done at this point was tell them to pack it up and leave.  But I didn't because I wanted to get onto the planting.  They offered to do the rest of the job for a total of $200. I refused to pay the extra $100. So, I still had the thrill of battling roots to put my plants in the ground and needless to say I will  NEVER call upon Antonio Joya Tree Service again.  They stood me up once, late the second day, then reneged on the original quote.  On top of all of that, they asked me to mention them to anyone that might be needing tree service, shrub or landscaping services.   So instead,  I am going to be honest with my neighbors and tell you that I DON'T RECOMMEND ANTONIO JOYA TREE SERVICE. 4951
