I have two friends with family members in the hospital and was thinking about sending a care package. I have no idea what to put in it beside reading materials. Any ideas would be appreciated. 4951

reading material, puzzle books, chap stick, lotion, snack foods, a TV guide... they never have those in the hospital and spend lots of time channel surfing.... 4951

@N+T:
You are very sweet to want to do something, but since I spent over a month in the hospital the best advice I can give you is this...   WAIT  till they are out to give them a gift or a give them a gift card for a nice dinner after they are out...   When I was in the hospital, I could not read or do anything that required concentration....  I just felt like crap and basically I just wanted to be left alone...   even visitors bothered me, I knew they were trying to be nice but you just feel like you have to entertain at your worst moment... (I much prefered a call)  Now after all is said and done I look back and the things I remember most are the people who took meals to my family while I was in the hospital and to us after I was out.  And the people who checked up on me AFTER I was feeling better...    Not sure why your friends situation is but this was how I felt....      Again very nice of you.. 4951

I've read this thread a few times and couldn't offer any good adice, but GoldenGirl's, I think, is perfect.I remember a hospital stay I had where I was bored with reading, flipping channels, etc. And snacks - the patinet may not be able to eat. However, once I got home, if someone offered to bring food (or a gift card) to help feed my family while I was getting back on my feet, that was ideal becuase it helped ALL of us!  Perhaps a nice note or card stating that you would like to offer to help with meals, light cleaning or even childcare (if applicable) once they're out of the hospital? (Or childcare even now if they could use it?!) 4951

I admit enjoying a coloring book and playing with
fart putty way past the years when they were acceptable. 4951

Thanks for all the advice.  I asked my friend if her mom wanted a visit first.  Plus my husband is a critical care nurse and can help explain in lay mans terms what the physicians are saying or not saying.   I just made it a very short visit and brought some chap stick, a nice journal and pen, a prayer book, and a deck of cards.  I looked for a TV guide but they are hard to find.The other person is a librarian that my DD loves and , I am just going to drop something off at her place of work.  I don't know her well enough to visit her husband in the hospital.   4951
